Executive Director of Communications, Office of the Dean – Georgetown University Law Center

The Executive Director of Communications (EDOC) collaborates with units across Georgetown University Law Center and Georgetown University to lead the development and execution of cohesive, multi-channel communications and marketing strategies focused around institutional goals and priorities. The EDOC ensures that communications and marketing strategies are coordinated across units and that institutional print and digital communications remain up to date and reflective of best practices. The EDOC uses contemporary and innovative strategies to expand Georgetown Law’s reach and connect with new stakeholders, supporters, partners, and underrepresented populations.

Work Interactions

The EDOC is an executive-level position that reports to the Associate Vice President and Chief of Staff, and who is a member of the Dean and Executive Vice President’s Leadership Team at Georgetown Law. The EDOC serves as a senior leader, strategist, and partner to lead and manage the planning and execution of an integrated program of Law Center marketing and communication. The Communications team works to enhance the image and increase the awareness/understanding of the Law Center and its programs. Serving as a member of the Leadership Team, the EDOC manages the Communications Department’s operations and provides supervision for creative and design services, internal communication, external communication, media relations, social media, marketing and branding, photography, design, print publications, video production services, and web content management.

As such, the EDOC develops and implements internal and external communications plans and serves as the lead advisor to the Dean and Executive Vice President regarding internal and external communications and marketing matters. The EDOC supervises growth and maintenance of social media accounts for the Law Center and directs content production for the Dean and Executive Vice President’s office (presentations, videos, print materials, webpages, etc.).

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field

Competencies

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to connect with a variety of audiences
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and to build consensus and strong collaborative partnerships across large and complex organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously to manage multiple projects and relationships, prioritize competing demands, and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and current and emerging technologies, trends, and approaches used to propagate a brand message that resonates with targeted audiences
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and experience communicating effectively with underrepresented and underserved audiences with cultural competency and sensitivity
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information with discretion
  • Expertise in web design and industry best practices
  • Proficiency in a variety of software and web-based platforms
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to take considered risks, seize opportunities, and act on convictions with an unquestioned personal integrity, while exhibiting tact, sensitivity, and mature judgment
  • Demonstrated strategic planning skills, with the ability to envision, develop, and implement communication and marketing programs following market research and best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize a variety of metrics to assess and inform strategies and tactics
  • Working knowledge of higher education communication; knowledge of law school education communication and/or legal communication preferred

Experience

  • At least 10 years of professional experience, in progressively responsible roles, in communications and marketing, including substantive responsibility for strategic implementation
  • Demonstrated experience envisioning, developing, and implementing a successful and comprehensive strategic communications and marketing plan – based on an organization’s goals and priorities – for a complex organization with a wide variety of audiences
  • Experience with implementing a comprehensive brand management plan
  • Experience building strong, effective, and collaborative communications/marketing teams
  • Communications and marketing experience in a higher education setting; familiarity with communications around legal issues, law school, and/or law faculty preferred
