Job Description Summary

The Evaluation Technician is responsible for supporting the implementation of evaluations of programs and strategic initiatives within the Faculty of Medicine. In collaboration with Evaluation Specialists and Associates, she/he will assist in the development of data collection instruments, facilitate collection and conduct analyses of quantitative and qualitative data, and assist in the preparation of reports for program stakeholders. The Evaluation Technician will also research, develop and make recommendations to improve processes associated with data collection and analyses.

Organizational Status

The Evaluation Studies Unit (ESU) was established in 2004 to provide program evaluation and strategic reporting services to support planning and decision-making within the UBC Faculty of Medicine (FoM). ESU provides comprehensive, rigorous and objective data to assist stakeholders in the on-going development and improvement of programs. The Unit is organizationally placed within the Education portfolio of the FoM, and is mandated to evaluate the effectiveness, quality, comparability, and impact of educational programs, provide supporting data for accreditation, and meet organizational and government reporting needs.

The Evaluation Technician will report to the Evaluation Manager. She/he will collaborate with the Evaluation Specialists and Associates on key tasks and deliverables that support their projects. She/he will also interact with faculty and staff from the FoM and attend and participate in committees, working groups and planning meetings as assigned.

Work Performed

  • Collect a range of data (e.g. surveys, focus groups, interviews, administrative data) from multiple sources
  • Conduct complex and routine qualitative (e.g. thematic) and quantitative (e.g. descriptive, inferential) data analysis
  • Interpret results and create data vizualisations for evaluation reports and summaries for use by leadership and decision-makers
  • Develop, deploy and monitor response rates to data collection instruments
  • Research, develop and make recommendations for new and improved processes and procedures for data collection and analysis
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues that may arise in the collection and analysis of data
  • Contribute to evaluation planning by providing input into the development and implementation of evaluation designs and methods
  • Implement evaluation activities in compliance with ethical requirements
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of presentations for decision-makers
  • Respond to student, staff and faculty inquiries related to assigned work
  • Perform other duties as required to ensure the successful completion of assigned work

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Evaluation Technician is responsible for the collection and analysis of data to support evaluation activities within the Faculty of Medicine. She/he is accountable for the accuracy and timely delivery of their work. Poor judgment or errors could result in delayed completion of projects or misinterpretation of information disseminated to leadership and decision-makers.

Supervision Received

The Evaluation Technician reports to the Evaluation Manager. She/he collaborates with the evaluation lead for assigned projects to agree deliverables, timelines and provide regular status updates to team members.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute.Evaluation, education, health or social sciences preferred.Minimum of 4 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Professional experience in program evaluation an asset. Demonstrated experience in qualitative and quantitative research/evaluation methods is required. Computer experience and competency with Microsoft Office and data analysis software (e.g. SPSS, NVivo) is also required.
