ALLOWANCE : EUR 1370 net per month + EUR 75 for days working from home

HOURS (FTE): 1 FTE (36 hours per week)

DEPARTMENT PURPOSE: Achieving systemic change and impact using Oxfam’s presence at every level, from local to regional to global, aligned with the vision of the Oxfam global strategic framework: influencing and engaging audiences around the world –through action and by generating financial support -to fight inequality to end poverty and injustice.

TEAM PURPOSE: This post will be part of the Oxfam International EU Advocacy team, which is mostly based in Brussels, Belgium. The team focuses on the European Union institutions, primarily the European Commission, Council, and Parliament; advocating for sustainable, inclusive, and accountable programming and policies and on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The team also acts as a service hub for the Oxfam Confederation, supporting country offices and partners to engage with the EU in Brussels, the OECD in Paris and in countries (EU Delegations), as well as coordinating efforts amongst European affiliates regarding European and aid policies.

JOB PURPOSE: To support the Oxfam EU media team to help secure EU news coverage on Oxfam’s positions and to help organise the Spark EU Climate Action training.

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Reading EU outlets to keep on top of the EU news cycle;
  • Creating and posting social media content on our LinkedIn and Twitter channels;
  • Discussing media strategies with Oxfam EU policy advisors;
  • Drafting media products like media reactions and press releases;
  • Learning how to train spokespersons to do interviews with journalists;
  • Updating Oxfam colleagues from around the world on our work by collating and sharing news on a weekly and monthly basis from the EU team;
  • Keeping internal documents updated – like our EU calendar which keeps information on all upcoming moments – and our journalist database;
  • Taking part in the organisation of the Spark project – from meeting speakers to logistics work such as booking hotels;
  • Managing the EU media inbox.

We cover issues ranging from migration, to tax justice to the climate crisis through strategic media and communications work. You will gain hands-on experience working with the EU advocacy and the global media team of a leading international non-governmental organisation. You will develop your skillset for: media, social media, and project management; and you will acquire practical knowledge of EU policy-making and legislative processes. You will also get the opportunity to work on the Spark EU climate action project which is a youth engagement project bringing young climate activists together to turn up the heat on EU climate action.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Media and communication

  • Help design, implement and review Oxfam EU’s media and communications strategies.
  • Keep Oxfam EU’s social media accounts up-to-date and draft social media content.
  • Draft media products such as press releases and media reactions.
  • Conduct internal communication work such as collating contributions to our weekly and monthly internal newsletter.
  • Conduct media monitoring and analysis.
  • Support in keeping Oxfam EU’s website up to date.
  • Support in keeping the journalist contacts database up to date.
  • Manage the Oxfam EU media inbox.

Project management

  • Support the organisation of the Spark EU climate action project.
  • Help organise advocacy and media events.

Secondment: there are opportunities to spend part of the traineeship with the advocacy team to gain an insight into a particular theme (e.g. climate justice).

  • Candidates must be organised and be able to multi-task.
  • A strong command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and gender issues, as well as the commitment to equal opportunities.

Desirable

  • Basic knowledge of EU decision-making politics and processes.
  • An educational background or training in communications and journalism or international politics and development is desirable.
  • Social media, layout/design, photo and/or video editing as well as multimedia skills are highly desirable.
  • Lived experience with intersecting systems of oppression, with knowledge and experience on how power and privilege play out in the contexts in which Oxfam works.
