ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you passionate about human rights and have experience in research and campaigning?

JOB PURPOSE:

To develop and implement campaigning strategies to deliver impact in relation to agreed priorities on economic, social and cultural rights in the Americas, with a particular focus on the right to health and sexual and reproductive rights in Latin America and the Caribbean. The person will be responsible for managing and coordinating actions on ESCR concerns while supporting and liaising with Amnesty International (AI) movement and outside networks to ensure maximum impact.

ABOUT YOU:

You will have proven experience developing campaigning and advocacy strategies regarding human rights issues, desirably including the right to health and sexual and reproductive rights. You will also have strong communication and networking skills, with the ability to research, analyse and report on relevant political and human rights changes.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To contribute to the development of overarching campaigning and advocacy strategies to deliver impact on ESCR issues in the Americas, with a particular focus on the right to health and sexual and reproductive rights in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • To participate and propose internal discussions, provide inputs, sophisticated , insights, and solutions regarding ESCR issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • To support and liaise with AI membership structures and maintain and develop respectful, functional, and collaborative networks of national and international NGOs, grassroots groups, social movements and other external partners for the development and implementation of campaigning strategies and plans.
  • To write or otherwise devise campaigning and other materials for external and internal use, such as reports, annual report entries, public statements, web features, audio-visual materials, and government correspondence.
  • To communicate AI’s concerns, positions and key messages to AI’s membership, civil society organizations and at other forums, including through lobbying at relevant public forums in relation to campaigning priorities and undertaking other advocacy, and in addition, as appropriate, represent AI in governmental, inter-governmental and various public forums and relevant regional bodies, as well as with the news media and others.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven experience in strategic campaigning and advocacy, including knowledge of the steps required to devise campaigning strategy, actions and campaigning techniques designed to benefit and protect vulnerable and historically marginalized groups.
  • Five years first-hand experience working on human rights issues or social justice issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • First-hand knowledge of ESCR issues in Latin America and the Caribbean; ideally on the right to health and in sexual and reproductive rights.
  • Experience working with and/or directly supporting local movements and affected by human rights issues in Latin America and the Caribbean. Ideally the candidate will also have experience building and/or supporting national and / or international campaigning coalitions and networks in the region.
  • Ability to understand and express ideas Spanish and English and, where applicable, other relevant languages (i.e., Portuguese) in a fluent, clear, and concise way, both orally and in writing, and to communicate complex information and institutional positions.
