ECF

The ECF is currently accepting applications for the role of Energy Correspondent. We are looking for a talented and experienced energy reporter with an interest in energy transition and climate change to write for a new website called Gas Outlook, devoted to the energy transition of global oil and gas companies.

This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who wants to use their writing and research skills to contribute to tackling one of the defining issues of our time and change the narrative around oil and gas from within – on an industry-savvy website aimed at energy executives and policymakers.

As Energy Correspondent, you would report to the Energy Editor, situated in the Strategic Communications team. ECF’s Strategic Communications team is the outreach unit of the foundation. Its role is to act as a centre of expertise for communication on climate change and to play an active role in helping create more political, media and public endorsement for action on climate change at an international, national and sectoral level. Team members deliver strategic advice, communications and outreach support to ECF’s programmes and its grantees, and work as part of a global network of communications experts to enhance the public debate on climate change and its solutions more broadly.

▪ Independently researching and writing well-sourced and discursive analysis pieces and occasional features or opinion pieces on the global green energy transition of the oil and gas sector, for Gas Outlook.

▪ Brainstorming and developing new story ideas with the Editor, including about parts of the world (especially Asia, the Middle East & North Africa) where there is currently less freelancer coverage.

▪ Keeping abreast of new trends and thinking around the energy transition in the oil and gas sector, with an emphasis on new technology and global ESG trends.

▪ Developing and nurturing contacts with oil and gas industry professionals, consultants, think-tanks and policymakers

▪ Occasional news-writing when required, including at conferences.

▪ Possibility of some writing and researching for different types of content for instance infographics, videos and newsletters.

▪ Some international travel possible to energy conferences and on reporting trips.

▪ A genuine interest in the mission and values of the ECF

▪ Previous experience as a seasoned energy journalist at a reputable international news agency/price reporting agency

▪ Experience writing about different geographies, preferably Asia/the Middle East/North Africa

▪ Solid networking and contact-building skills, either remotely or in-person at conferences

▪ Desire to use energy/financial journalism skills to build a new narrative around oil and gas and the green energy transition

▪ Ability to see both sides of the story, producing analysis pieces that are unbiased, factually correct, sophisticated and insightful for an audience of energy executives and policymakers

▪ Comfortable researching and writing about new and complex solutions eg turquoise hydrogen or low carbon ammonia

▪ Experience or desire to share content on social media and build following

▪ Autonomous self starter who can conceive of, and execute, engaging and in-depth analysis pieces under minimal supervision

▪ Ability to spot new and under reported topics

▪ Fast-learning self-starter happy working in a fast-paced international environment

▪ Superior English language skills, both written and verbal

▪ Ability to work flexibly both independently and in a team

▪ The disposition to work with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers

▪ The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across phone/video conferencing, time zones, Slack, Trello, etc.

▪ A commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to facing climate change
