General context of the project

In a humanitarian crisis, making decisions is a challenge. The situation is constantly changing and information is scarce. Humanitarian actors must be able to zoom in on important details as well as quickly analyse the overall picture. The role of the Regional Office for Emergency (ROE) is, therefore, crucial for the quality of our programmes. It shall guarantee that INTERSOS missions and regions have a coherent and constant update of the humanitarian situation at country, regional and global level. ROE, on top of direct management of Ukraine, Afghanistan and Venezuela crisis, supports country and regional programmes with regular and updated context analysis, producing recommendations, in line also with relevant international cooperation agencies and main donors.

The constant access to updated humanitarian data and updated analysis will therefore help INTERSOS Head of Missions and Regional Directors to revise and adjust country programme strategies in line with the main humanitarian needs and trends and with the internal capacity. Ultimately, through the above-mentioned process, ROE ensures readiness at country/regional level to respond to both natural and man-made emergencies in our programs, through collection of information, analysis and planning.

The ROE Intern will work in collaboration with the ROE team in HQ to support the RD and HoMs in constantly analyse the major humanitarian crisis through the preparation of internal INTERSOS “crisis country sheet/sitrep”. Managing emergencies & revision of ongoing programmes/strategies in case of rapid scale-up or deterioration of humanitarian crisis in countries/areas where INTERSOS is present.

General purpose of the position

At the end of the experience, the intern will have acquired in-depth knowledge of the mechanism and dynamics of the international humanitarian response and will be able to navigate to its different emergency phases. Similarly, the intern will have acquired basic knowledge of planning, management and monitoring of country missions. Finally, the intern will acquire a general understanding of the internal functioning of a complex humanitarian organization such as INTERSOS.

Main responsibilities and tasks

  • To daily revise and analyze specialized humanitarian papers, articles, crises updates and bulletins available on the web and in other international platforms;
  • To prepare weekly humanitarian country crisis reviews;
  • To support in the revision of INTERSOS programme strategies based on the possible humanitarian scenarios;
  • To support the ROE in the organization of internal training and learning sessions on key concepts, principles, normative frameworks, methods, and strategies related to humanitarian action;
  • To support the ROE with project proposal writing;
  • To support the ROE with the translation in English/French/Spanish of relevant documents.

Required profile and experience

Education

  • Be enrolled in a Master’s degree in Economics, Political Sciences, International Cooperation and Development, or other (related to Humanitarian Aid) subjects.

Professional Experience

A previous internship/ volunteering experience in a humanitarian organization will be considered a plus.

Professional Requirements

  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong writing skills
  • Basic knowledge of Program Cycle Management and Logical Framework
  • Good knowledge of Excel

Languages

  • Italian, Spanish fluent spoken and written.
  • English will be considered essential.
  • French is a plus.

Personal requirements

  • Enthusiasm, flexibility and strong learning attitude
  • Strong motivation and adherence with humanitarian principles and INTERSOS mandate and values
  • Be enrolled in a Master University Degree Program for the entire internship duration.
