Position Title: Emergency Response Unit, Preparedness and Response Division (PRD) Intern

Duty Station: Geneva, Switzerland

Classification: Intern

Type of Appointment: Six months, with possibility of extension

Organizational Context and Scope:

Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM became a UN-related organization in 2016. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

At IOM Headquarters, within the Department of Operations and Emergencies (DOE), the Preparedness and Response Division (PRD) serves as the main instrument for migration crisis preparedness and mitigation. PRD oversees IOM’s timely, predictable and effective interventions in emergency situations by implementing a broad range of programmes, in coordination with humanitarian partners, through the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) and the cluster framework.

Under overall guidance of the Head of PRD and the direct supervision of the Senior Emergency Preparedness and Response Officer, the successful candidate will be providing support to all aspects of the Emergency Response programming for strengthening IOM’s humanitarian response.**

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Support information gathering from regional offices and IOM missions in the area of emergency response.
  • Support the development and improvement of internal PRD knowledge management systems by regularly collecting internal and external emergency response updates and sitreps related to the emergency crisis.
  • Support PRD’s role in providing assistance to crisis-affected missions, including through the consolidation and tracking of the emergency response surge deployments and relevant financial expenses in coordination with global project, relevant technical units within PRD and roster staff.
  • Assist the Emergency Response Unit on the provision of support to crisis affected Regional and Country Offices for strategic planning throughout the humanitarian program cycle, including in inter-agency process and internal response plans, as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of IOM’s Global Activity Report for Emergencies in coordination with all relevant units.
  • Support the PRD efforts and contribution towards various initiatives such as diaspora engagement in emergency settings, humanitarian and development peace nexus, environment and climate change nexus, better prevent, respond and achieve solutions to internal displacement.
  • Support the development of talking points, reports, background notes and notes for the file for a variety of meetings and presentations focusing on emergency response, including for IOM meetings with key donors.
  • Provide general logistic and technical support for the preparation and organization of webinars, trainings, surveys and other events.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in International Relations, International Development, Political or Social Sciences and/or or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or
  • University degree in the above fields.

Experience and Skills

  • Experience in relevant thematic issues in the area of migration, displacement, and humanitarian assistance.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently.
  • Experience working with international humanitarian/development organizations, non-governmental institutions/organizations.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills: SharePoint, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word. Familiarity with web content creation and update is an asset.
  • Strong writing and reviewing skills in English.

Languages:

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish. For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge in French, Spanish and/or Arabic is an advantage.

Eligibility and Selection:

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) Have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

b) Are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) Are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor;

d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated, who have less than two years of relevant working experience;

e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

f) This internship programme will be supporting the Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. As this will be a teleworking opportunity and will be required to overlap with the duty station, please consider the time difference in the duty station prior to applying.

g) Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.
