What we are looking for

NRC is looking for an Education Specialist to join the Mozambique mission. The role holder will be responsible for setting the strategic direction and ensuring programme/technical development and quality assurance of the Education thematic area. The Education Specialist is responsible for quality assurance, the development of tools and procedures, fundraising, donor relations, and provision of mentoring, training, and capacity building to staff.

If you are an action-oriented, execution-driven executive; with experience in developing and integrating distinctive strategies; and a track record of fostering a collaborative environment and building effective teams, then this is the role for you!

What you will do

  • Education strategy development.
  • Fundraising (develop proposals, budgets, and donor reports).
  • Technical quality and synergies in project implementation.
  • Technical direction and project implementation support.
  • Systematic training and capacity building of technical staff**.**

What you will bring

  • Post-graduate qualification.
  • Project/Programme Management experience in a humanitarian/recovery context.
  • Education in emergencies expertise.
  • Child protection work for displaced children track record.
  • East Africa context knowledge and exposure.
  • Complex and volatile context exposure.
  • English and Portuguese fluency, both written and verbal.

What makes this position attractive?

  • Mozambique has experienced disasters and armed conflict involving non-state armed groups in the last five years. As of February 2023, 1.6 million people are in need of assistance, including those vwho remain internally displaced. The conflict has impacted economic activities in the region. Some internally displaced people have begun returning home since, though precarious conditions in areas of origin have often resulted in secondary displacements. A further 1 million people were affected by Cyclone Freddy in September 2023.
  • Humanitarian assistance, centred around settlements with increased focus on host communities and return areas, remains affected by funding gaps and a small humanitarian presence, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
  • NRC has provided first-line humanitarian response since 2021 with multi-sector activities in Shelter; Education; Food Security; and Information, Counselling, and Legal Assistance. The focus is on supporting people in hard-to-reach areas, working in partnership with authorities and local actors.
  • Meaningful work, with a high-quality integrated programme that responds to the diverse needs, priorities, and concerns raised by beneficiary communities.
  • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to join our work culture that empowers every employee to share ideas and take responsibility.

What we offer

  • Pemba, Mozambique duty station.
  • 12-month contract duration (renewable, subjecting to funding, performance, and requirements).
  • Grade 9 in NRC’s Salary Scale, with accompanying terms and conditions. NRC offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.
  • NRC is an equal opportunities employer and aims to have staffing diversity in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, and physical ability.
  • We think outside the box, encourage ideas, and give responsibility to all employees at all levels. You will have many opportunities to be heard and take the initiative.
