NRC has been working in Yemen since May 2012. NRC’s programme combines integrated programming and issues-based advocacy. The full programme currently covers 10 of the 22 governorates in Yemen, through three area offices: Aden, Hodeidah and Sana’a. There are few humanitarian agencies responding in the education sector, consequently, and gaps remain high. NRC Yemen is therefore rapidly expanding its education programme in response to the extremely high education needs.

NRC is looking for an experienced Education Specialist to provide quality technical support in the design, development and coordination of NRC’s education programme in Yemen, through all stages of the programme cycle; to provide technical support to implementation teams to ensure programme quality and assurance; and to raise the profile of Education in Emergencies in Yemen.

Main Responsibilities:

  • You will have overall responsibility for technical soundness of NRC’s education core competency (CC) strategy, fundraising for the strategy, proposal development and reporting, and programme quality, equity and inclusiveness.
  • You will also be responsible for staff capacity development and ensuring proactive steps are taken to maximize synergies / integration with other NRC core competencies as well as other agencies.
  • Your success will depend on a sound understanding of the context, adaptability, and developing technically sound programme and project interventions that are based on accurate analysis of needs and context; quality bench marking; writing winning proposals to ensure funds are in place to allow for education activities and building staff technical knowledge.
  • You will be responsible for representing NRC at different levels; at country level as part of Education cluster level and its technical working sub groups, and at NRC regional & Global level.

Qualifications

Professional competencies that you should have:

  • Advanced University Degree / Master’s Degree in Education or other relevant humanitarian or social science degree
  • Experience as a qualified teacher with a minimum of a Certificate in Education is preferred
  • Adequate years of relevant field experience providing technical support for education in a humanitarian context, in conflict-affected, volatile or protracted/complex environments, and preferably with at least 2 years experience at a specialist / advisor / country office level
  • Good knowledge on Education donors and developments / debates in the Education sector
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal. Competencies in Arabic language is preferred;

  • Ability to rapidly understand the policy, strategic and institutional environment and to provide contextually appropriate and achievable technical advice.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills, with a proven track record of developing Education strategies, proposals, budgets, and implementation plans for education programmes
  • Ability to use child-centered, process-oriented teaching and learning methodologies
  • Knowledge of child protection and psycho-social support principles and practice.
  • Understanding of humanitarian principles and INEE Minimum Standards for Education
  • Knowledge of the political situation in Yemen and Middle East region.
