Position Title: Education Coordinator specialized in Inclusive Education

Location: Kasulu – Kigoma, Tanzania

Reports to: Project Director

Organizational Context

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international non-governmental organization with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organization was founded in November 1980 and has a presence in over 56 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office in Rome. The style of JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term wellbeing of refugees, while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs. JRS offers opportunities to a wide variety of staff, local and international, while maintaining a realistic and localized scheme of salary/stipend, insurance, etc.

Operational Context/Role

The Education Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to Support the implementation of JRS education activities and inclusive education in Kasulu –Kigoma, Tanzania in order to guarantee the quality of formal and informal education services provided to refugees in Nyarugusu camp.

The position requires good communication skills, leadership, and the capacity to work with a team. Analytical thinking and the capacity to research innovative intervention methods, as well as creativity and flexibility are also expected.

Key Responsibilities

  1. General
  • Coordinate and implement all the Education related activities in collaboration with the Project Director and in liaison with schools, government and education agencies.
  • Responsible for carrying out the Needs Assessment for the education program and the preparation of the proposals and reports in collaboration with the Project Director
  • Design and coordinate workshops/training activities for JRS education program.
  • To monitor day-to-day activities of the education program to ensure the best practice is adhered to.
  • Design and oversee the implementation of innovative & individualized training programs for teachers, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members and government education supervisors.
  • Work closely with parents/stakeholders by designing and overseeing the implementation of capacity building programs that will help them easily supporting girls and children with disabilities in schools.
  • Keep an inventory of materials and fixed assets procured and supplied to schools.
  • Coordinate and share ideas and updates with the Psychosocial Coordinator for all the common practices and beneficiaries.
  • Collaborate on Developing M&E framework for the program in collaboration with the Project Director.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager and the Country Program Manager and his/her assistant in program proposals, budgets and reports, as requested. Supervise the work of incentive workers in the refugee camp.
  • Developing M&E framework for the training programs.
  • Perform other tasks as reasonably assigned and mutually agreed with the Logistics Office
  1. Staff Management & Planning
  • The Education Program Coordinator supervises the work of the Assistant Education Coordinators, Tutors, and all the staff in the Department
  • He/she plans for the staff needs of the Department
  • Control the use of the resources in the Department
  1. Reporting
  • Keep the Project Director informed on the activities of the project by providing relevant correspondence, reports and meeting minutes as well as making regular updates.
  • Responsible for prompt submission of all Education department financial and narrative reports to the Project Accountant/Project Director.
  • Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, mid-year, and annual reports to the Project Director.
  • Gather, complete and submit monthly means of verification to the Project Director.
  • Collaborate with the Country Program Officer and its assistant on the quality of educational programs/activities.
  1. Networking
  • Responsible for coordination and liaison between JRS and other agencies/local government/local communities/refugee community as regards to JRS’ Education program in conjunction with the Project Director
  • Represent JRS at the stakeholders meetings as necessary e.g. Education Working Group Meetings.

Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • University degree in education with Special Needs/Inclusive Education or equivalent from a recognized institution.

Experience

  • Experience (at least 3 years) working with NGO in education sector
  • Experience in managing people/teams.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with marginalized communities.

Language

  • Fluency in English and Swahili (written and spoken) and excellent writing skills.
  • Knowledge of French and Kirundi will be advantaged.

Technical Skills

  • Strong analytical, reporting, strategic thinking and planning skills.
  • Strong monitoring and evaluation skills/experience.
  • Strong pedagogical competences.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

The candidate must be available to start immediately. The JRS remuneration policy is aligned with the JRS ethos of providing effective and professional services whilst expressing solidarity with those served. Salary is calculated using a post-adjustment multiplier and takes into account years of relevant experience and the degree of responsibility of the role.
