Samos Volunteers

Samos Volunteers (SV) is an independent group of volunteers providing hygiene, informal education and psycho-social support to people living in the Samos camp.

The Education Coordinator works to ensure the quality and consistency of the informal educational program offered by Samos Volunteers in the Alpha Centre and Alpha Land. With English, French, German, Greek and Computers, the Education Coordinator has responsibility for a key element of our psychosocial support programme.

Location: Samos, Greece

Status: Full-time

Key Responsibilities:

Leading on education programming duties, and working closely with the coordination team to decide the overall direction of the Samos Volunteers’ informal education offering;

Contributing to SV’s community engagement and diversity initiative including recruitment and support of teachers from the camp community;

Training new teachers in class management, behaviour, teaching advice and attendance recording through inductions, co-teaching and workshops;

Chairing the weekly teachers’ meeting;

Teaching classes of varying language levels and monitoring student needs, interest and demands;

Developing and adapting the classes offered in response and according to available resources;

Looking to introduce new processes and systems to improve the consistency and quality of classes, including student feedback surveys;

Managing the student registration system and being the point of contact for students;

Coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator regarding the scheduling and initiation of activities;

Organising the teaching resources on a regular basis, add/remove materials as needed, and date and develop new syllabi and resources as necessary;

Representing SV at Education meetings with other actors on the island.

Desirable Requirements:

Aged over 24;

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact with various actors and express ideas and concepts in written and oral form;

Teaching qualification, i.e. CELTA, TEFL, TESOL or Bachelor degree in a field related to education;

A minimum of two years teaching experience, ideally in a language teaching context;

Experience working with educational programs, including curriculum development, administrative processes, resource management, and syllabi and training plan creation;

An understanding of the complexity and challenges of humanitarian work, ideally with experience in a similar organisation or environment;

Experience delivering online teaching modules will be considered an advantage, owing to the complex, ever-changing situation of people’s movements being restricted;

Fluent English skills;

Flexibility. Living and working on Samos is constantly changing and adapting, and two days never look the same. The ability to be adaptable and flexible is extremely important.

Further Information:

Accommodation in a shared house is provided, and the Coordinator will have their reasonable living expenses refunded by the organisation. This will be 400 euros per month.
