EnCompass LLC is seeking an Editorial Manager to ensure EnCompass products and technical deliverables are clearly written and adhere to the company’s style and quality standards. This includes support for all levels of editing, document formatting, and writing. The Editorial Manager also helps coordinate requests for editing, formatting, and writing to ensure that EnCompass technical teams and other groups receive the services they need from the Communications Team. When not engaged on technical product deliverables, the Editorial Manager will work closely with other members of the communications team, the business development team, and company thought leaders to implement the company’s strategic communications priorities by developing content and positioning pieces that communicate effectively about EnCompass’ approaches and expertise.

The position may be based at EnCompass headquarters, in Rockville, Maryland, or at a remote location within the US.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US for any employer without sponsorship.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential functions include the following:

Communications Services (60% LOE)

  • Provides high-quality, audience-focused editorial services (copy editing, proofreading, substantive editing, and writing) and document production (formatting) support for external and internal products and technical deliverables (e.g., evaluation reports, studies, strategies, training material, work plans, new business proposals, blog posts, white papers, and news articles) in compliance with EnCompass’ and client’s branding and marketing standards
  • Collaborates with other Communications Team members to manage incoming requests, assess individual and team workload, and prioritize tasks
  • Designs and delivers orientation sessions, refresher training, and other learning opportunities to raise EnCompass staff’s knowledge and skills related to editing, writing, and EnCompass’ style
  • Collaborates with other members of the Communications Team to create and update EnCompass templates for reports and other materials, and orient teams on how to effectively use them
  • Periodically reviews the EnCompass Style Guide and related tools and resources to reflect current industry trends or organizational changes; updates materials as needed; and orients staff across the company to any updates
  • Contributes to team and corporate work plans, quality initiatives, and other activities that apply to the role of communications at EnCompass

Strategic Communications (40%)

  • Create, update, and execute communication strategies, including longer-term strategies and more targeted plans related to organizational changes and events
  • Monitor, assess, and troubleshoot elements of company communications strategies and plans
  • Partner with technical, business development and operations staff to provide writing and communications support in support of company priorities, proposal development efforts, and events
  • Research, review, and analyze industry reports, media articles, and digital engagement to inform communications activities and support messaging
  • Design and deliver training, mentoring, and/or other opportunities to build staff skills in effective, audience-centered communication

Other

  • Supervise staff, as needed
  • Engage fully as a member of the EnCompass staff team, including participation in staff meetings and other EnCompass events
  • Other duties as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma and 11+ years of experience; Associate’s degree and 9+ years of experience; Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of experience; Master’s degree and 5+ years of experience; or PhD and 3+ years of experience experience. Degree in Communications, Journalism, Professional Writing, Public Relations, or related field preferred.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Superior writing and editing skills for print and digital platforms
  • In-depth command of English language grammar and syntax
  • Ability to understand and translate complex business information into key messages to EnCompass’ clients, partners, and other target audiences
  • Ability to restructure parts of language to achieve grammatical correctness, linguistic efficiency, uniformity, and seamless readability without disrupting the author’s style or intended meaning
  • Exceptional thoroughness, heightened attention to detail, and commitment to consistency
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the guidance in an organization-specific style guides, and differentiate between American and British English to adhere to client’s standards as needed
  • Advanced skills in working with templates and formatting materials using Microsoft Office programs, especially Word and PowerPoint; working with charts in Microsoft Excel
  • Flexibility, openness to change, and proven ability to manage multiple priorities/tasks and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work independently with diverse team at all levels of an organization; and aptness in inclusivity and multiculturality
  • Understanding of compliance with Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act and/or copyright law highly desirable
  • Ability to provide clear and constructive feedback, and receive feedback from colleagues
  • Strong work ethic with a commitment to excellence
  • Ability to work in an appreciate and strengths-based environment and coach others in using appreciative approaches
  • Knowledge of more than one language is preferred
  • Familiarity with international development programs is highly desirable
