Hirondelle

Fondation Hirondelle is seeking to hire a specialist in media and project management to oversee the operational and editorial activities of the Doh Athan project.

The position is based in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The expected duration is 6 months, subject to extension if further project funding becomes available.

The project:

Doh Athan is a podcast, produced by Fondation Hirondelle, a Swiss based organization, in partnership with Frontier Myanmar, a news magazine. Doh Athan, “Our Voice”, is a weekly 10-minute podcast with videos and articles for the web and social media, covering human rights issues. It is produced by Frontier’s team and through partnerships with local reporters and media from different states, regions and ethnicities in Myanmar. The podcast is available online, via social media and on Voice of America’s Burmese service. Fondation Hiorndelle provides daily support to editorial staff and operations, including fundraising. In 2021, Frontier had to relocate to Chiang Mai, Thailand and now works remotely.

Mission :

Under the supervision of the Asia Program Manager at Fondation Hirondelle, the Editorial and Project Officer carries out her/his activities on the operations assigned to her/him in Chiang Mai (Thailand). She/he embodies the values of the Foundation, promotes its mission and enforces its regulatory framework.

  • She/he ensures that the editorial content meets high quality and professional standards and is delivered on time.

  • She/he oversees and manages the Doh Athan team of journalists.

  • She/he is responsible for implementing the project’s action plan, to which she/he also contributes by participating in the development of the country strategy.

  • She/he represents Fondation Hirondelle with partners and donors.

  • She/he embodies Fondation Hirondelle locally, representing its values, its mission and its programme.

  • She/he might be asked to carry out ad hoc activities to support the development of the FH’s presence in the region.

Editorial responsibilities:

  • Conduct weekly editorial meeting with 4-5 staff to review proposed topics for production.

  • Provide regular mentoring to staff and tailor-made training when needed.

  • Review English language translations of radio / podcast scripts for Doh Athan.

  • Provide corrections and changes as needed.

  • Request further clarification and data for stories if required.

  • Write introductory text for scripts to be used on Facebook posts.

  • Review Video productions (5-8 minutes) and edit English subtitles and revise video edits with video editors.

  • Ensure regular communications with Frontier regarding production and broadcast.

  • Monitor activities and audience online with the Social Media Officer.

  • Provide weekly reports to the HQ team regarding production/broadcast, security issues and other issues that could compromise the project implementation.

  • Ensure, in accordance with Fondation Hirondelle’s rules, the safety of the project’s people and equipment.

Operational activities:

  • Supervise and contribute to the implementation of other project activities, such as training for partner media, studies, assessments, etc.

  • Initiate, direct and control the financial and general administration of field operations.

  • Ensure the project calendar and action plan are up to date and communicate them to the Programme Manager and the local team.

  • Regularly identify the needs of the population, anticipate factors of change in the project and propose solutions or evolutions to strategy.

  • Monitor funding opportunities and potential partnerships with local actors.

  • Ensure external communication with partners and donors in the country.

  • Contribute to the production of narrative reports to the Programme Manager as well as to donors to keep them informed of progress made and difficulties encountered in project implementation.

  • Ensure regular internal communication regarding the project (for example, weekly newsletter, posters, meetings, etc.).

  • Ensure a smooth flow of information with the Programme Manager, including ensuring that activities and needs relating to the project and its staff are communicated in a timely manner.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years programmatic experience in a relevant non-profit organization.

  • Minimum 5 years editorial experience.

  • Previous experience working in Myanmar.

  • Proven experience training and/or mentoring media professionals.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English

  • Burmese or Thai language skills would be an asset

  • Good understanding of project management cycle and command of project management tools.

  • Interpersonal skills including diplomacy, tact, and the ability to negotiate with stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication skills – speaking, writing and listening.
