JOB MISSION

The Washington Office of the International Trade Union Confederation and the Global Unions Federations (GUFs) is seeking a full-time Economic Research Officer.

The Office leads engagement with International Financial Institutions (IFIs), comprised of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and regional multilateral development banks. With the IFIs, the Office advocates for trade union priorities including labour rights and sustainable development.

JOB DESCRIPTION

To work under the supervision of the Washington Office Director on the following areas:

  • Monitor and influence IFI activities on topics including workers’ rights, labour market and financial regulation, inequality, just transition, tax, social protection, gender, debt, wages, austerity, and public services;
  • Research and write statements, briefings, submissions and other internal or external materials on the economic and social policies of the IFIs;
  • Track IFI lending and conditionality, providing information and analysis to unions;
  • Organize meetings and events with the IFIs, including an annual international trade union conference, public panels and union and exchanges with country, regional, or sectoral departments of the IFIs;
  • Develop and maintain relations with IFI staff, relevant academic and non-governmental organizations, and take part in activities on behalf of the Office;
  • Participate in the design and implementation of trade union strategies to reform the IFIs and multilateralism;
  • Office administration including financial reports to headquarters.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • University-level education in economics, international affairs, labour studies or similar fields, or a combination of relevant experience and training. A capacity for economic and labour market analysis is preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge about and/or research experience in international economics, development policy, and IFIs;
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated knowledge of the role and function of the trade union movement, particularly at the international level;
  • Advocacy and analytical skills;
  • Experience with strategic advocacy or organizing campaigns;
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills in English; knowledge of French or Spanish is an asset;
  • Ability to work in a small team and meet deadlines with attention to detail;
  • Familiarity or experience in event organization and office management;
  • Availability to undertake international travel.

Once appointed, the candidate must be able to commute to Washington, DC. Successful candidates must be authorized to work in the United States or able to obtain authorization expeditiously.
