Overview of position:

  • The economic insights & research unit is responsible for developing high level summaries & economic reports on all major global economic developments, events & topics of interest & relevance to policy makers.
  • These reports are designed to inform top official within the Saudi government & require the input of highly qualified economists with expertise in writing insightful & impactful reports, summaries & recommendations.

The Economic Advisor will work directly with the Head of the Economic Insights & Research Uni & will assist in the following tasks:

  • Writing short economic studies, reports & analysis pieces.
  • Review the unit’s work, presentations & opinion pieces & provide evidence based insights & supporting arguments for economics responses & viewpoints.
  • The workload will depend on requests from top management.
  • On average, we require assistance on 4 such pieces per month of length from 5 to 10 pages (or equivalent presentation slides) & with the proper economic data & analysis.
  • To continuously contribute to periodic short economic reports, studies & summaries.
  • To continuously contribute to the annual state of the economy flagship publication of MEP.

Specific duties & responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare economic reports on specific macro economic developments & indicators.
  • These reports should be up to the professional economic standards in terms of sound analysis & correct methods.
  • Conduct economic impact assessment for proposed policies & specific government projects.
  • Prepare weekly briefing material to H.E. the Minister on key economic developments & trends.
  • The briefing slides should be insightful & useful to policy makers who are not necessarily Economists.

Project reporting:

  • The expert will be reporting to MEP while keeping our client informed.
  • A detailed work plan for the expert’s duties & responsibilities will be formulated by MEP.
  • S / he will be supervised by the head of the Strategic Economic Insights & Research Unit & will work in collaboration with other consultants & the relevant MEP technical staff as deemed needful.

Key competencies:

  • University Degree in Economics or Finance (Post Graduate Degree in Economics is preferable).
  • 5 years for Bachelor’s Degree holders.
  • This requirement can be waived for Master’s & Ph.D. holders (on case by case basis).
  • In addition to solid economic knowledge, we require strong writing & data analysis skills.
  • Experience in statistical software & econometric packages is a plus.
  • Knowledge & experience of working with constituents in the Arab states, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
  • Demonstrates integrity & fairness by modelling UN values & ethical standards.
  • Demonstrates professional competence & is conscientious & efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines & achieving results.
  • Display cultural, gender, religion & age sensitivity & adaptability.
  • Excellent command of English, working knowledge of Arabic would be considered an asset.

  • This role has no team management responsibility.

Further information:

  • A written approval from our client & relevant authorities will be required to facilitate the consultant’s travel to any locations than stated on this TOR on official missions where necessary.
  • The expected duration of the assignment is to be up to 12 months with a possibility of extension subject to the availability of funding & performance.
