For US locations: Atlanta, Washington, DC (preferrable, non-remote), with the ability for remote work from other locations in US where CARE is registered.

CARE is a leading humanitarian and development organization focused on combating poverty and social injustice, with a strong emphasis on rights programming, gender equality, and empowering women and girls. The Water Team within CARE manages global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and water resources management (WRM) programs, collectively known as Water+, to address critical needs and contribute to CARE’s 2030 Vision. The Water Team provides technical leadership, strategic direction, and innovation to ensure program quality and sustainability. Led by the Water Team Director, the team engages in partnership building, thought leadership, resource development, and advocacy to advance CARE’s water+ initiatives and integrate them across various sectors. The Director also plays a key role in fostering relationships internally and externally to support CARE’s broader goals and impact.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strategic global leadership and collective action: Strengthen CARE’s use of systems approaches, gender-transformative approaches, and integrated programing to enhance CARE’s water-related and multi-sector impact. Grow and sustain CARE’s role as a global leader in WASH and WRM through the promotion of best practices and integrated, multi-sectoral approaches that advance the lives of women, girls and marginalized groups. Lead coordination with sector partners, coalitions, working groups and other initiatives, including social movements. Lead, on behalf of the CARE Confederation, Water+ priorities within CARE’s Vision 2030 Strategy, including actively engaging with the Food, Water, and Nutrition Impact Area Strategy Steering Commitee and representing the CARE Confederation in water-related fora. Help advance CARE’s global advocacy efforts on the right to water and sanitation.
  • Program and staff management: Lead a dynamic and globally based team of 6-8 senior water and WASH professionals, to provide on-demand quality technical assistance, document and promote best practices, and directly manage a large Water+ portfolio that encompasses independent and integrated initiatives.
  • Resource Development and Program Design: In coordination with other PSI and fundraising teams, spearhead and coordinate fundraising and resource mobilization strategies to increase and diversify Water+ funding, programming, learning and partnerships.
  • Research, Learning, and Advocacy: Develop and support CARE and sector-wide learning agendas in and across WASH, WRM and related sectors to deepen collective impact. Grow the influence of CARE’s Water+ learning internally and externally through proactive engagement with CARE teams, key partners and institutions, coalitions and global dialogues.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post graduate degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with WASH and gender issues; commitment to gender-transformative approaches.
  • Previous training in project management, staff management, and open mind to lead team while valuing and incorporating team perspectives and values.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience managing programs and/or teams to provide technical guidance or support to successful implementation of water, WASH or related programs.
  • Strong technical understanding and demonstrable experience in the area of WASH and/or Water Resources Management, including the use of systems strengthening approaches.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with multi-stakeholder teams in a global and multicultural environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in team management and leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, budget oversight, and portfolio management.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
