We’re looking for a stellar Director of People, Culture & Operations to lead an increasingly strategic and a newly-merged people and business operations function that supports our evolving talent management and operational compliance needs as our organization matures. This is a critical full-time role that will drive excellence in our operations, and act as a trusted partner on all matters related to people, our greatest asset!

As a member of the leadership team, the role will drive a number of strategic and operational operations initiatives and will lead and work closely with the People and Business Operations Team in achieving functional goals, nurturing organizational culture, and ensuring high quality, accurate and consistent service.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Thought Partnership (5%)

  • Contribute to organizational strategy and annual planning as a member of the leadership team, and ensure people and business operations initiatives are aligned with the overall strategy

Drive Culture Building (10%)

  • Inspire and curate a people-focused culture in our physical and virtual spaces that celebrates the diversity of teammates and makes Medic an employer of choice
  • Help ensure Medic is an equitable and inclusive employer with a safe workspace where all teammates feel valued and can thrive
  • Develop initiatives to enhance teammate relations and communication across the organization to align, shape and reflect our culture and values
  • Research and implement best practices for maintaining organization’s health during change, scale and growth

Functional Leadership (20%)

  • Lead, motivate and mentor the People and Business Operations team and champion their retention, recognition and career growth
  • Build a strong and cohesive team, ensuring a culture of high-performance, transparency, accountability and service-orientedness
  • Translate Medic’s strategic plan into operational plans, goals and priorities for the People & Business Operations team, and build and manage the team’s annual budget
  • Serve as a dot connector across Internal Operations and collaborate closely with the Finance & Admin team to ensure alignment of operational processes, systems, and procedures

Talent Strategy Ownership (20%)

  • Develop and implement a talent strategy in line with organizational needs and strengthen talent initiatives across the employee life cycle
  • Lead organizational workforce planning to analyze and forecast workforce needs, assess gaps, ensure succession planning, and define targeted talent management interventions with the Sr People Ops Generalist and leadership to ensure that the Medic workforce is aligned to its strategy
  • Work with Sr People Ops Generalist to ensure our recruitment and onboarding process is robust, competitive, efficient and targeted towards a diverse candidate pool in line with our local-first talent strategy
  • Develop and implement a global learning & development initiative focused on addressing skill gaps and facilitating teammate growth aligned with individual and organizational needs
  • Build and maintain Medic’s career matrix and competencies across all roles in collaboration with the Sr People Ops Generalist to reflect organizational needs and offer clear growth paths for teammates
  • Develop and implement a growth-focused performance management system encompassing clear goal-setting, periodic assessments, reviews and documentation processes
  • Act as a partner to all managers and leaders to build trusted relationships, serve as a guide on all people and culture related matters, and ensure our talent strategy and HR pratices and policies are fair and high-quality

Oversee Total Rewards (10%)

  • Maintain our total rewards philosophy and policy in collaboration with senior leadership to ensure incremental growth, equity and transparency in our rewards offerings to the extent feasible, resources permitting
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices related to total rewards
  • Lead execution of total rewards-related initiatives including the maintenance of our compensation framework in collaboration with Sr People Ops Generalist and Comptroller
  • Ensure strategic, consistent and transparent communication to managers and teammates on total rewards policies and processes

Organizational Compliance (15%)

  • Oversee org-wide people, administrative, and entity (Kenya, Nepal, US) compliance; identify compliance gaps; and develop appropriate systems, processes, and documentation to ensure greater compliance with relevant laws in consultation with legal counsel
  • Stay abreast of changing legislation and regulations across our geographies
  • Oversee all organizational policies and procedures, ensure they reflect our organizational values, and ensure regular policy refreshers and compliance training for all teammates
  • Oversee and at times, conduct fair investigations into reported violations of Medic policy in compliance with relevant laws, engaging third parties as needed
  • Oversee maintenance of contract templates and review of new contracts to ensure compliance with relevant laws and organizational policies
  • Assess possible teammate safety and security gaps and recommend appropriate mitigation measures
  • Partner with Finance leadership, Sr People Ops Generalist and Business Operations Manager to implement an EOR solution that meets the needs of the organization and independent contractors

Organizational Processes and Systems Improvements (15%)

  • Mature our internal operating systems and processes and ensure clarity, compliance, and service-orientedness
  • Drive organization-wide resource planning and management in collaboration with functional team leads to ensure alignment, collaboration, transparency, resource efficiency, and support for donor reporting requirements
  • Ensure that technology systems and platforms used across the organization (including Notion, Slack, Salesforce and others) are incrementally optimized to ensure high-quality, usefulness, and value for money
  • Oversee the implementation of an org-wide HRIS to enhance efficiency and improve performance management across the organization
  • Strengthen internal data systems (including workforce and CRM data) to ensure that data is secure, accurate, and can be easily leveraged for targeted support and leadership decision-making

Miscellaneous Support (5%): Other responsibilities as assigned! Medic is a fast-moving organization, and roles & responsibilities will change over time.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive professional HR experience, and at least 2 years in a strategic HR leadership role
  • Bachelor degree in Business Administration/Human Resource Management or related fields required. Masters degree is preferred
  • Human Resources professional certification, HRCI-SPHR or SHRM-SCP highly preferred
  • A broad base of practical technical knowledge and skills related to human capital, people strategy, talent management and employee engagement, and broad knowledge of US and international employment law
  • Demonstrated experience as an HR generalist supporting 50-100+ teammates in globally distributed, and cross-cultural settings
  • Experience with non-profits is preferred
  • Must be flexible with working hours to communicate with global teams
  • Ability to travel 15-20% to hubs
