IRAP

About IRAP

The International Refugee Assistance Project (“IRAP”) is a dynamic and growing legal and policy advocacy organization that works to develop and enforce a system of legal and human rights for refugees and displaced people around the world. We are the leading organization providing free and comprehensive legal services to people in need of a safe place to live and a safe way to get there.

IRAP operates offices in the U.S. (New York City, Washington, D.C.), Jordan (Amman), Lebanon (Beirut), and Europe (Berlin). Our legal and advocacy teams work closely with a corps of pro bono lawyers from 75 leading law firms and multi-national corporations, and law students who have created 29 IRAP chapters across the United States and Canada. Through this work, we aim to assist refugees and other displaced people to find safe passage and to transform the landscape of refugee rights. IRAP has over 100 full-time staff members. We are a nimble organization staffed by an innovative and collaborative team that is committed to high standards of quality and close partnerships with our clients, peers, and colleagues.

IRAP believes that diversity is critical to fostering a strong workplace and serving our clients well. We strongly encourage applications from people with lived experiences of displacement or marginalization and individuals whose identities are underrepresented in their profession.

About IRAP’s Operations Department and the Tech Team

IRAP’s Operations Department, which is based out of New York City and has members in other offices, supports the work of our staff, interns, and volunteers around the world through IT, finance, human resources, and administrative avenues. The Tech Team manages the technological needs of IRAP and exists within the Operations Department.

Opportunity

IRAP seeks to hire a Director of Legal Technology to steward our growing technology platform for case management, client engagement, and partner engagement. This will require building/maintaining new technical solutions and integrating new systems with existing ones.

The role will involve listening to stakeholders to understand current needs and foresee future needs, providing guidance to identify and achieve the objectives in an extensible way, pushing back against suboptimal options, directly doing some technical work, and managing the technical work of others. This role will manage a portfolio of legal technology, largely centered around Salesforce and related integrations; but given the small size of the team, this role will also manage certain smaller projects from start to finish. This work will include applying agile project methodologies where appropriate, controlling change, and managing project scopes, timelines, budgets, risk management plans, and contracts. Frequent and clear communication will be needed across teams and among any tech collaborators on a given portfolio/project.

The person hired for this role will report to the Director of Analytics, Technology, and Automation (DATA) and will work closely with other staff. They will supervise other staff in a managerial capacity and must be comfortable leading through influence and working with individuals across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Design—and, in some cases, implement—software architecture solutions that integrate platforms (especially Salesforce) to advance IRAP’s mission and values; in particular, to advance our legal work.
  • Own the technical aspects of our client- and partner-engagement platform, which will involve Salesforce and integrated systems.
  • For certain software projects, explain technical design considerations to non-technical colleagues for their assessment.
  • Manage software projects from start to finish, including stakeholder communication (usually involving legal team leads), user training (often staff and students), and documentation.
  • Ensure software solutions are performant, very secure, and scalable/extensible.
  • Delegate some projects to other Legal Technology team members and collaborate with staffers not on your team.
  • Maintain projects that you’ve built and cross-train other tech staffers so that the maintenance burden is shared.
  • Work with Data Protection Officer and Tech Security Manager to ensure software systems are GDPR compliant and secure.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years experience building Salesforce customizations, integrations, and creating the technical architecture for Salesforce implementations.
  • Salesforce Administration Certification
  • Commitment to employing an anti-racist/anti-oppression lens to foster a diverse, equitable working environment.
  • Desire to make your co-workers’ lives easier and to ensure they get the most out of our software, whether they are experts or novices.
  • Comfortable working in a small, collaborative team environment and working across departments to build solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to convert programmatic requirements into appropriate technical solutions.
  • Ability to use discretion and appropriate safeguards with confidential data.
  • Excellent oral and written English. Additional languages are a plus.
  • Alignment with and commitment to IRAPs mission and values.

Preferred

  • Experience with nonprofit processes, such as case management, impact assessment, tracking individual giving, and supporting grant reporting.
  • Experience of Salesforce work in multiple environments.
  • Advanced Salesforce certifications, such as Platform Developer or Technical Architect.
  • Working knowledge of Visual Force, Apex, and Lightning Component development; experience with SOQL & SOSL.
  • Experience with Salesforce integrations with Form Assembly, chatbots, Gmail, WhatsApp, and/or document storage.
  • Experience supporting data migrations into Salesforce.
  • Proficiency in agile project management methodologies and with their practical application.
  • Project / Program / Portfolio management certification in good standing (e.g. PMI, PRINCE)

Location and Hours

IRAP has offices in the U.S. (New York City), Jordan (Amman), Lebanon (Beirut), and Germany (Berlin); for candidates applying from these locations, in-person or hybrid work environments are possible once returning to the office is safe. Remote candidates who are able to work during 9-11am Eastern time (IRAP’s best time for cross-department collaboration) are also encouraged to apply. The position is full time (40 hours per week).

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $100,276 – $141,742 commensurate with experience and location.

Benefits vary across office locations, and IRAP seeks to offer equitable and generous benefits to all employees. IRAP’s US benefits include fully paid family health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401k with a maximum employer match of 4% of salary, extensive PTO (20 vacation days, 5 personal days, 19 holidays and last week of the calendar year off), comprehensive leave time for sickness, disability and parenting (4 months of parental leave) as well as reimbursement for work from home equipment and generous opportunities for professional development.
