About the Position

The Director of Finance and Administration plays a critical role, working with the senior leadership team as a strategic thought partner in managing BRAC USA and guiding the organization’s financial operations. The Director leads an internal team supporting the overall financial management of the organization, office administration, and technology. The Director works across the global organization with other finance leaders in BRAC country operations in Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Uganda, etc.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Financial Management

  • Supervise and own responsibility for all aspects of the organization’s financial operations. Ensure integrity in financial reporting, budgeting and financial systems.
  • Prepare and manage the annual organizational budget and periodic financial reports for internal management purposes and for presenting to the Board of Directors. Operating budget is ~$5M-$6M; total assets ~$35M; recorded revenues typically in the $25M range but reaching as high as $75M.
  • Staff the Finance Committee and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors. Work closely with Finance Committee to maintain investment portfolio (~$5M) in accordance with the investment policy.
  • Lead the annual audit process, which includes internal project management, managing the relationship with the auditors, preparation of the financial statements, including supporting schedules, and preparation of the IRS Form 990.
  • Maintain the general ledger through ongoing review of transactions entered into the accounting system in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Prepare and/or review quarterly balance sheet reconciliation schedules.
  • Maintain the organization’s financial accounting policies and procedures in accordance with industry best practices.
  • Support grant proposals and grants management by supporting the grant budgeting process, ensuring accurate accounting for grants and contracts, preparing periodic financial reports, and conducting or supporting monitoring visits and internal audits of donor funded projects. Active grant portfolio totals ~$70M.
  • Provide strategic oversight to support growth for fundraising portfolios specifically as it relates to financial systems and procedures.
  • Ensure that gifts are accurately processed and acknowledged.
  • Manage the process for preparation of and completion of state agency charitable registrations and filings.
  • Prepare and process semi-monthly payroll. Prepare 1099s and W2 forms.

Office Administration

  • Manage day-to-day oversight of office operations, including reception management, facilities and supply management.
  • Oversee group technology and technology improvements, in conjunction with outsourced IT service provider.
  • Oversee renewal of business insurance policies.
  • Manage relationships with legal, banking, and insurance compliance service providers.
  • Serve as administrator for the expense reporting system.

Organizational Management, Leadership and Team Building

  • Serve as an effective leader of the organization, participate in the active management of the office, and contribute to a positive team and office environment. Offer guidance and mentorship to junior staff and peers.
  • Build and manage a high performing finance and administration team. Support talent acquisition and staff retention. Seek out and share professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Work closely with the Director of Human Resources to oversee employment administration, including payroll and benefits administration.
  • Model BRAC USA’s values, offer clear direction to the finance and administration team, set well-defined expectations, and provide constructive feedback that contributes to growth.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • The ideal candidate has experience of having full responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, financial reporting and audit coordination.
  • Working knowledge of applicable financial practices and procedures, as well as a thorough understanding of donor, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with – colleagues who do not have finance backgrounds.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position has direct supervisory responsibility for two Finance and Administration staff members.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; experience with a CPA firm would be ideal.
  • At least 10 years of overall professional experience in finance and operations management. Experience in non-profit management desirable though not required, as long as candidate is eager to learn.
  • Experience with Quickbooks, Google Suite, MS Office and Salesforce.
  • Experience managing direct reports.
  • Willingness to work in the office a minimum of two – three days per week.
