Refugees International

Refugees International (RI), a humanitarian organization that advocates for lifesaving assistance and protection for refugees and other displaced people, seeks to hire a Director of Finance and Accounting. Reporting to the President, the Director will partner with senior staff in strategic decision-making and financial management as RI continues to enhance its global advocacy. This person will manage RI’s accounting and bookkeeping, financial planning and analysis, strategic planning and budgeting, internal controls infrastructure, audits, tax filings and regulatory filings.

In addition, ideal candidates enjoy establishing and maintaining streamlined systems and management tools.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounting

  • Ensures that the accounting records are in accordance with GAAP, non-profit accounting principles and standards;
  • Manages vendor relationships and procurement procedures;
  • Develops and implements effective internal controls over the completeness and accuracy of all financial transactions and record keeping;
  • Oversees the annual review of policies and procedures for the organization as it relates to financial matters;
  • Evaluates financial and reporting systems and oversees roll-out of upgrades and/or new systems;
  • Implements monthly and quarterly close procedures for timely production of financial reports;
  • Keeps abreast of new accounting principles to ensure timely compliance and implementation;
  • Adheres to and updates the accounting and policy manuals as needed;
  • Manages annual audits and all tax and statutory filings.

Revenue Recognition

  • Works closely with the Development team to reconcile financial records, appropriately classify donor restrictions, correctly classify and account for grants, develop accurate revenue forecasts and analysis of event revenues and expenses.

Grant Management

  • Manages all financial, program, and grant accounting and reporting functions;
  • Provides grant application budgets as required by funders.

Investments

  • Works with the Investment Committee to monitor investment portfolios, policies and liquidity needs;
  • Oversees endowed and restricted funds and ensures compliance with donor stipulations and investment policy.

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Leads the organization wide annual budgeting process and 3-year financial planning strategy;
  • Monitors the execution of the budget and prepares financial forecasts quarterly;
  • Prepares comprehensive financial reports including multi-year modeling, liquidity assessments, cash flow analysis, and management narratives;
  • Presents reports to the Finance Committee, the Board and such other Committees as appropriate.

Risk Management

  • Works closely with the Chief Administrative Officer to identify, monitor and mitigate the critical financial and business risks of the organization.

EXPERIENCE and EDUCATION:

  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience in finance and accounting, preferably in the non-profit space;
  • BA/BS or MA in Finance and Accounting required, CPA preferred;

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED or PREFERRED

  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of DEIB;
  • Knowledge of and practice in non-profit accounting principles and standards;
  • Demonstrated experience presenting financial reports and summaries;
  • Experience with a variety of accounting software programs (e.g Quickbooks, Blackbaud Financial);
  • Adept at working with Excel;
  • Ability to explain complex finance and budget parlance to colleagues, and communicating clearly with staff in a constructive and engaging manner;
  • A successful record in setting priorities;
  • Talent to multi-task;
  • Experience liaising with members of a governance Board;
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of Refugees International;
  • Good cheer and collegiality.
