Director – Consumer Policy and Engagement

Solicitors Regulation Authority

Whether it’s protecting the public or increasing access to justice, consumers are at the heart of all our work.

The Director of Consumer Policy and Engagement will play a central role in understanding and promoting the consumer perspective and achieving our mission of driving confidence and trust in legal services.

It is an exciting time to be working in legal services regulation. The impacts of new technology, changing consumer expectations and questions about the sustainability of current consumer protections are some of the key issues we are grappling with. In this role you will work closely with colleagues, including in policy development and research and analysis, to help us understand how we can achieve the best results for consumers.

This newly created role will be responsible for successfully leading a team dealing with key, strategic, cross-cutting issues: consumer policy; Welsh Affairs; Public Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement; and Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

The successful applicant will establish a new team to create a focal point for consumer policy matters and combine this with our existing Welsh Affairs function. You will help develop our current Public Affairs function, with a particular focus on strategic stakeholder engagement. You will also support and enable our established EDI Team to maximise impact.

Engaging in key debates about consumer policy and maintaining close engagement with consumers and consumer groups, you will maintain a strong profile externally and deepen the connection between strategic objectives and policy developments.

What’s in it for you

  • play a central role in understanding and promoting the perspective of the consumer across all of our policy work
  • showcase your communication skills – represent the SRA across a range of stakeholder groups
  • the opportunity to shape and inspire a new team through confident and effective leadership

What we are looking for

  • a good understanding of consumer issues
  • demonstrable track record of delivery of effective consumer policies
  • the ability to forge strong relationships with consumers/consumer representatives/policy makers/think tanks and third sector organisations
  • excellent communication skills and experience of representing an organisation on a public stage
  • evidence of successful stakeholder management and influencing at the highest levels in organisations.
  • experience of working with senior stakeholders, including Boards and Board members, to develop and deliver effective policy
  • proven leadership and people management experience in a comparable role.

Experience of EDI policy work, Welsh Affairs, strategic public affairs or legal services policy is desirable but not essential.
