Summary

The Director Collections Strategy & Systems is responsible for developing and executing BECU’s overall collections strategy and for leading key functions impacting the credit union’s ability to measure, predict and manage delinquency and charge off. The incumbent maintains and manages collections systems and oversees the development and implementation of portfolio collections strategies. The Director Collections Strategy & Systems directs the activities of the Collections Systems and Strategy department and acts as the primary liaison between the department and other areas of the Credit Union.

The Director Collections Strategy & Systems ensures a comprehensive and effective execution of Collections annual projects and initiatives, prepares and shares presentations, leads the development, testing and rollout of new collection strategies, negotiates effectively with vendors, stands up due diligence efforts as needed, and provides escalation support on complex issues between team and external vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all responsibilities in accordance with BECU Competencies and Information Protection requirements.
  • Manage a team that focuses on developing maintaining and enhancing Collections reporting, analytics and strategy.
  • Establish and enhance collections reporting across all delinquency buckets, ensuring timely and high-quality distribution and including actionable insights.
  • Conduct collections analytics to better understand collections performance and identify opportunities for improvement. This includes providing profitability estimates across various loss mitigation options that enable collectors to prioritize options offered to members.
  • Propose collections strategy to enhance effectiveness and efficiency of collections. This includes assessing timing and intensity of calling/treatment across all Collections buckets.
  • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise to direct Portfolio Management projects aimed at enhancing established processes, including system enhancements, process improvements and revised workflows.
  • Lead the design and implementation of new and the revision of existing automated workflows to enhance collections efficiency, consistency, member experience and internal controls.
  • Lead a collaborative effort with other Portfolio Management managers and directors in the planning and execution of business goals, quality service delivery, programs and material design and functions, including established standards, protocols, metrics and quality assurance reviews.
  • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise to develop and deliver test plans designed to ensure controlled and successful delivery of enhancements of existing or new technologies.
  • Maintain a high level of industry involvement by continuously engaging with other members of the default management industry and be knowledgeable about industry changes and advancements.
  • Collaborate with BECU Information Technology and third-party technology vendors to maintain and enhance Portfolio Management technology infrastructure.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring and training within the department to develop and encourage employee performance. Meet with staff on a timely basis for the purpose of conducting Mid-Year and Year-End Reviews.
  • Ensure timely and accurate services are provided by ensuring managerial leadership, direction and effective monitoring of performance. Establish departmental and individual goals and objectives that are consistent with the operating plan.
  • Develop and submit for approval an annual budget for department expenditures to ensure budget guidelines are met and exceptions are approved.
  • Develop, maintain and leverage a thorough knowledge of all state and federal regulations pertaining to lending and lending functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. degree in business or equivalent work or education related experience required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum ten years of experience working with default management strategy development, decision engines, and default management reporting (roll, vintage, etc.)
  • Experience working with scoring models preferred.
  • Experience working in progressively responsible financial institution leadership positions in lending/credit operations or credit strategy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in compliance and federal regulation issues for consumer and commercial lending functions.
  • Experience in developing, leading and monitoring the strategic direction of credit operations.
  • Proven success in leading and directing the work of others.
  • Prior experience in developing and maintaining budgets.
  • Ability to present a professional image when dealing with management and staff and outside contacts.
  • Proficient verbal and written skills to efficiently communicate.
  • Proficient interpersonal skills to ensure member related issues are handled in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Effective leadership and negotiation skills.
  • Full time hours required with additional hours as necessary.
