ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Internews is contracting a consultant to research and author a report analyzing global trends in digital threats against civil society for a project within the Internet Freedom & Resilience team. The researcher will compile research and create a Global Threat Report, building on case studies and individual country threat landscape reports created by the Internews team. The author will conduct desk research to analyze global trends in digital security threats and connect the global trends to the existing country threat landscapes. The researcher will also work with the Internews technologist to develop mitigation measures that can be adapted by digital security practitioners around the world into their standard operating procedures.
LOGISTICS
This is a short-term, remote position. Candidates should possess independent work authorization in their work location that does not require employer sponsorship. Additionally, there are some locations where Internews is not able to support remote work.
This is a limited-term position anticipated for 11-16 days.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:
The researcher will draft a report providing a narrative description of trends and major developments in digital threats to civil society. Where appropriate, it will also include illustrative graphs and charts that provide useful summaries of desk research. The final report will integrate the case studies and country threat landscapes developed by the Internews team into a format for publication on the Internews website and broadly within the digital security community. The researcher will send the first draft of the report to the Internews team. The team will review, highlight key areas, and provide feedback. Using this feedback, the researcher will return a final draft with resolved feedback.
The research will comprise an estimated 11-16 days of work and involve the following elements:
- Report Planning (1-2 days): The researcher is expected to develop an outline and draft an initial research plan (to be reviewed by the project team).
- Desk Research and Consultation (4-5 days): The researcher is expected to consult with Technologist and select project partners to review project data and conduct desk research into trends in global threats against the digital security of civil society mostly based on data collected during the scope of the project.
- Analysis and Mitigation Development (2-3 days): The researcher is expected to analyze the gathered information and work with the Internews technologist to develop mitigation measures for digital security practitioners.
- First Draft Report (2-3 days): The researcher will draft the report. The Internews team will review the draft and the consultant will agree to incorporate comments by the project team (up to 2 revisions total)
- Final report (2-3 days): Final report will be compiled into a publishable format.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Required
- Experience in producing technical narrative reports.
- Experience conducting qualitative research and ability to proficiently articulate findings.
- English proficiency is required.
- Ability to work independently, efficiently, and reliably, to a high standard and to deadline.
Preferred
- Preference given to individuals with previous experience in digital security AND/OR knowledge of threats to civil society.
