Background Information – Job-specific:

This position is located in the Digital Services Section (DSS), Information Management Branch (IMB), United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. With its partners, OCHA contributes to principled and effective humanitarian response through coordination, advocacy, policy, information management and humanitarian financing tools and services.

With team members based in The Hague, New York, Nairobi, Bangkok and many others working remotely around the world, DSS develops and maintains tools, services and technology solutions to inform and enable rapid, effective and principled humanitarian response worldwide. Its portfolio of information services include ReliefWeb, ReliefWeb Response, and Humanitarian ID. This mission-critical work involves 24/7 operations and content oversight to ensure continuous development, management, quality, and availability of information via web, mobile or social channels to target audiences.

** While the duty station is listed as New York, USA, flexibility may be considered to allow the position to be home-based depending on the incumbent’s personal situation. In case the position becomes home-based, the work hours of the incumbent shall be Eastern-Standard Time (EST) time zone. The fee scale will be determined based on the actual physical location of the incumbent per UNOPS rules and regulations**

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Under the direct supervision of the Sr. Programme Management Assistant, the Digital Operations Assistant will join the Operations team that facilitates the work of content, development and product teams within the Section. Provide digital and quality assurance support for all services and deliverables of the content management team, internal and external users;
  • Assist in ingestion of content on assigned web properties in coordination with content contributors and editorial teams;
  • Monitor and evaluate content management workflow, estimate and escalate risks to managers; make recommendations on productivity, performance and risk mitigations;
  • Report technical issues via established ticketing system;
  • Participate in planning, implementation and monitoring of digital updates and initiatives and manage relevant timelines;
  • Assist the Operations Team in implementing, monitoring and maintaining standards, policies, workflows and guidelines related to efficient and effective management of digital operations; undertake maintenance of digital tools and resources;
  • Analyze project requirements, identify suitable productivity and collaboration tools, support the configuration of solutions and their knowledge management within the team;
  • Assist the Sr. Programme Management Assistant in documenting and monitoring relevant digital projects and making strategic recommendations to team members and managers on a regular basis; manage conflicts and escalate issues as appropriate;
  • Perform other duties and related side projects within the Operations team, as required.

Education/Experience/Language requirements:

Education

  • A High School diploma is required.
  • A technical diploma in a relevant field may substitute 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in information technology, information management, programme management, communications (Marketing, Arts, Media, etc), international affairs or a related field is preferred and may substitute for some of the required years of experience.

Work Experience

Required:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the field of information technology, information management, programme management, communication, international development or a related field.
  • Digital information literacy as well as knowledge of basic Internet standards and technologies (i.e. Microsoft Office 365 products).
  • Experience using productivity and collaboration tools, automating processes with technology.

Desirable: (the following experience is optional; candidates who do not have it are welcome to apply):

  • Experience analyzing and/or interpreting clients’ needs
  • Experience with digital content products and services;
  • Experience working on distributed teams;
  • Experience with Agile project management methodologies, such as Kanban;
  • Good knowledge of and hands-on expertise with Salesforce configuration;
  • Good knowledge of and hands-on expertise with data analytics like Power BI;
  • Good knowledge of Google Analytics or similar tools
  • Familiarity with international affairs, including emergency response, disaster management, peacebuilding and peacekeeping, conflict resolution, human rights and IHL.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.

Language

  • Fluency English (read, write, speak) is required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language (French and/or Spanish) is an asset.

Contract type, level and duration:

Contract type: Individual Contractor Agreement (ICA)
Contract level: Local Individual Contractor Agreement (L-ICA 5)
Contract duration: 6 months with the possibility of extension, subject to the availability of funds.
