Position Title: Digital Communication and Social Media Consultant

Reports to: Head – Global Political Strategy

Location: Flexible

Capacity: Three months – Mid September to Mid December 2022

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:

Climate Action Network (CAN) is a global network of more than 1,800 civil society organisations in over 130 countries driving collective and sustainable action to fight the climate crisis and to achieve social and racial justice.

CAN members work to achieve this goal through information exchange and the coordinated development of NGO strategy on international, regional and national climate issues. CAN has regional and national network hubs that coordinate these efforts around the world. The ideal candidate will have a passion for online engagement.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

We are looking for a competent and creative Digital and Social Communication Social Media Specialist. This will suit a motivated and driven individual who brings along substantial experience and who can work both collaboratively as part of a team and also independently to advance climate justice.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

– Design and execute a social media strategy and digital communications strategy that is fully integrated into CAN’s overall strategy, furthering its priorities and objectives. During the period of this contract the work will focus especially on, but not be limited to, the delivery of CAN’s objectives at COP27

– Design and develop material for online and offline platforms including website content, social media content and launch campaigns on different platforms eg: twitter storms etc.

– Design and editing graphics, videos and podcasts (incl. audio-editing), newsletters, email campaigns, campaign web pages, and other

– Create, develop and edit compelling, high-quality with a focus on graphics, text and animation in line with CAN’s brand and design language

– Cover live events and conduct interviews for posting on digital channels.

– From time to time, take on additional tasks and attend meetings, if and when required to support the delivery of the Communications Strategy

– Manage and update the CAN website on WordPress

Education and professional qualifications:

● Equivalent academic/vocational experience in Digital Communications, Digital Marketing or Journalism

● Knowledge of digital and communication tools like WordPress, Mail chimp, and social media tools and basic design and editing skills on Photoshop, Adobe and Canva will be required.

Job-related experience & knowledge:

● 5-7 years of experience in digital communications, social media and/or journalism work in any organisation

● Excellent communication and coordination skills with good attention to detail

● A clear political understanding of the role of civil society and movements in addressing climate change, climate justice and the intersectionality thereof, and the ability and eagerness to apply that understanding in the approach to our work

● Desktop publishing skills

● Excellent knowledge of social media platforms and of emerging trends and tactics in digital media, including demonstrable experience of successfully developing, designing and managing web and social media strategies, including WordPress; Twitter; Facebook; LinkedIn; Instagram; YouTube and Vimeo and with a command of each network and their best practices

● A proven track record in developing creative and innovative campaign or content ideas, including through the use of videos, infographics and other visuals

● Skills on video editing and graphic design are highly desirable

● Fluent in English, writing and speaking, fluency in other languages is an asset

● Knowledge of various international political negotiations around climate change and prior experience with the UNFCCC

Job-related skills/abilities:

● Ability to design documents and compelling graphics for media and social media

● Ability to communicate complex or technical issues in creative, simple terms

● Organised and able to work to manage tasks and meet deadlines

● Cross-cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively in different socio-cultural contexts, good listener, facilitator and consensus-builder;

● Ability to take initiative, and to work independently and proactively;

● Ability to work remotely as part of a diverse and international team;

● Strong identification with CAN’s values including but not limited to transparency, honesty, inclusiveness, empathy, solidarity and respect.

IT Skills and requirements:

● Computer skills: advanced competence in MS Office & project management tools

● Ability to coordinate meetings and work plans in a virtual environment and using digital tools

Language ability:

● Fluency in spoken and written English required

● Any additional language will be an advantage

Travel:

● Ability to travel internationally as required
