Department

The Systems Department in the U.S. office of Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is comprised of four technology teams: Digital Internal Operations, Product & Innovation, Infrastructure & Operations, and Helpdesk., Together they provide the vital products and services so that MSF-USA can achieve its ambitious new Strategic Plan (2022-2025).

Project

The role of DevOps will fill a major need for the department and the organization. The existing Infrastructure and Operations team is moving towards a cloud native strategy. A recently formed Product and Innovation team has a product lead and a team of software engineers who are building new products for MSF. The DevOps role will look to advance the collaborations between these teams as well as other teams within MSF-USA and across the MSF movement.

Tasks

MSF-USA is looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to join our technology team. The DevOps engineer will be responsible for deploying and managing resources on a variety of projects. Other responsibilities may include managing our code repositories, as well as implementing CI/CD pipelines and practices. This position will aid our Infrastructure, Product and Innovation, and other external teams, helping them to build, test, and deploy releases on schedule.

The DevOps role reports to the head of Product and Innovation and the position will take on increasing responsibilities in the first year. We are looking for some with a desire to grow and take on these responsibilities. If you do not meet all these criteria but are eager to learn and grow, we are still interested in your application. Our infrastructure runs on the Microsoft Azure stack. Lack of experience in this specific stack will not exclude candidates, but candidates will have to work in this eco-system.

Qualifications

Profile Requirements

• 3-5 years working in a DevOps or similar role

• Designing, maintaining, and administrating complex systems in cloud computing ecosystem (Azure or AWS)

• Experience working with Docker and Docker compose.

• Knowledge of SecOps best practices

• Lead and advance DevOps practices with stakeholders across the organization where needed.

• Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

• Comfortable working in a culture where consensus-building and inclusive decision making is valued

• Passion for the humanitarian mission and values of MSF • A commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Preferred/Nice to Have

• Experience in technology issues at humanitarian organizations (either in field or HQ settings)

• Familiarity with standard CRM data workflows

• Basics of a scripting language, such as Python, Ruby, or JavaScript • Experience working with Kubernetes

Additional Considerations:

The role is focused on emerging technologies and novel solutions, any familiarity with our current stack is a bonus. MSF is largely within the Azure/Microsoft environment and we use a diverse array of technologies and resources: Terraform, Azure CDN, Custom Applications, self-hosted but external applications (such as Apache Superset), Linux and Windows servers, Azure Cognitive Search, and Application Gateway. Additionally, there is always room to propose ongoing improvements.

Expected to work in a hybrid work environment with the ability to come into either the NYC office or regional hub (Washington, DC) a minimum of 2 times a week.
