Development Officer

International Crisis Group

The Development Officer will cultivate and solicit a portfolio of prospects and donors, including individuals and corporations with the capacity to give ≥$10,000-$250,000 as well as identify and qualify new donors to meet both individual and organisational fundraising goals with the objective of growing annual giving and broadening the major gift pipeline. Working in a fast-paced, challenging, and intellectually stimulating work environment, you will play an important role in energising and elevating Crisis Group’s existing development efforts.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Director of Philanthropy and the rest of the Philanthropy team, contribute to the development and execution of the annual strategic fundraising plan and other organisation-wide strategies.
  • Cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of individual and corporate donors while identifying and qualifying new donors to meet fundraising goals.
  • Design and execute comprehensive solicitation strategies with particular emphasis on upgrading existing donors to higher levels of giving.
  • When appropriate, develop detailed tailored funding proposals in partnership with programs, policy and finance.
  • Help design and execute the annual Board of Trustees appeal.
  • Collaborate with the Development team on identification, cultivation and stewardship opportunities for donors and prospects.
  • Strategically engage current Crisis Group supporters, board members, and organisation executives in peer-to-prospect identification, visits and solicitations.
  • Partner with colleagues to support the Women’s Global Alliance for Peace, including solicitation of new members and renewals.
  • Work collaboratively with Crisis Group leadership and the Development team to staff events and donor engagement activities.
  • Manage the Ambassador Council platform to engage and expand a cohort of young professionals that support Crisis Group’s mission.
  • In collaboration with the Development Operations team, provide guidance and support for development events.

1-year Portfolio and Frontline Fundraising Goal

  • 3 months: Develop cultivation and solicitation plans for all prospects in the Senior Development Officer portfolio and make initial introductions to 50%.
  • 6 months: Active cultivation is underway, with meaningful qualification, solicitation and stewardship activity progress demonstrated.
  • 9 months: Utilising relationships, identify additional prospects for cultivation and solicitation in year two.
  • 1 year: Significant solicitation activity and progress towards goal.

Requirements include:

In addition to at least 3 years of fundraising experience, including experience with annual giving or memberships, you will be a rigorous, highly productive, and entrepreneurial individual. You will ideally also possess the following skills and characteristics:

  • Demonstrates comfort engaging with high net-worth donors and corporate leaders in diverse philanthropic cultural contexts, and a track record of personal success in asking and closing gifts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Trustees.
  • Strong metrics orientation and a willingness to set and achieve defined personal as well as team goals.
  • Able and willing to travel extensively; able and willing to travel and work outside normal business hours as needed.
  • A passion for the work of International Crisis Group and a desire to continually broaden and deepen the organisation’s impact.
  • Superior oral and written presentation skills.
  • A working knowledge of fundraising software and tools.
  • Patient listener, likeable, diplomatic and engaging.
  • Collaborative, inclusive, and team-driven.
