Development of Urban Acceleration Core Curriculum Practical Manual

Organization Background

Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HiH EA) is a registered Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Kenya with a mandate to operate within the Eastern Africa region. It is a member of the Hand in Hand Global Network that comprises affiliated organizations that mutually pursue the shared goal of poverty alleviation by supporting poorer communities to create sustainable jobs and enterprises.

The organization started operations in Kenya in October 2010 and is currently operating in 25 Field offices within 33 out of 47 Counties in Kenya**.**

Overall Objective of the Consultancy

HIHEA works in facilitating communities out of poverty through creation sustainable enterprises. Following a successful urban acceleration pilot project the last 3 years; HIHEA seeks to review one of its enterprise accelerator curriculums. The overall objective of the assignment is to develop innovative and practical manual that will help in pragmatic delivery of training of SMEs by HIHEA business development officers. The practical manual development will involve review of the current urban accelerator curriculum and trainer manuals after which the consultant is expected to develop a more practical delivery manual. The manual must incorporate the following; Peer learning, Group problem solving, using real world examples, Gamification, Aiming for < 15% training lecturing among other adult learning tools that will be deemed necessary.

Scope of work

The consultant is expected to complete the following task

1. Review of current Urban curriculum and how it was delivered in the KMES pilot program
2. Review of technical capacity of BDOs
3. Needs assessment of sample SMEs
4. Development of practical manual reflecting on (1), (2) and (3) above
5. Host validation session with HIHEA and other beneficiary stakeholders
6. Develop final manuals incorporating stakeholder feedback

Tasks and Deliverables

1. Inception report
2. Accelerator curriculum review report; highlighting gaps and improvement areas
3. BDOs capacity assessment report ; highlighting capacity improvement gaps
4. Draft practical manual
5. Training guidelines for BDOs who will deliver the curriculum
6. Final approved soft copy manuals with HIHEA comments incorporated after presentation and discussion.

Key qualification experience of the Firm/ lead individual:

1. 10 year experience in Kenya’s entrepreneurial ecosystem
2. Masters Degree in entrepreneurship, business and related disciplines
3. Proven ability to demonstrate innovative thinking and previous experience working in curriculum design for MSMe
4. Ability to work independently to strict timelines
5. Strong interpersonal skills, good communication and excellent planning and facilitation skills.
6. Excellent written and spoken English skills and
7. Sound reporting skills.

The consultant firm bidder is asked to submit the below

a) A statement on consultant’s or firm’s capabilities including:

• Consultant(s) or agency profile outlining areas of expertise.
• Evidence of undertaking similar assignments in the recent past.
• Any direct or relevant past experience of undertaking similar initiatives.

b) A brief 3 pages proposal of the understanding and interpretation of the TOR and the scope of work, outlining the approach and plan to accomplish the assignment.

c) Names and CVs of the professionals who will be involved in the assignment.

d) A proposed timeline indicating activities/sub-activities to be undertaken and the corresponding outputs.

e) Financial proposal

f) Tax compliance certificate
