Fairtrade Africa

1. Background

Fairtrade Africa (FTA), a member of the wider Fairtrade International movement represents Fairtrade certified producers in Africa and the Middle East. We operate four regional networks: Eastern and Central Africa Network (ECAN) based in Nairobi, Kenya; West Africa Network (WAN) based in Accra, Ghana, Southern Africa Network (SAN) based in Blantyre, Malawi and the Middle East and North Africa Network (MENA).

Fairtrade Africa is owned by its members, who are African producer organizations certified against Fairtrade International Standards producing traditional export commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, flowers, cotton, bananas, cane sugar, wine, fresh fruits, herbs and spices and non-traditional commodities including shea butter and rooibos tea. Currently, the organization represents over 1,083,139 producers across 28 countries in Africa. Fairtrade Africa secretariat is located in Nairobi, Kenya, and has 50% ownership of the Fairtrade system.

2. The Objective of the Assignment

FTA – ECAN is inviting qualified and experienced bidders (Experts) to submit their quotation for developing, designing and printing 100 copies of the final (after FTA review and approval) Training of Trainers Manual on clean energy interventions for social-economic, health and environmental benefits within the fairtrade system for hired labour and small producer organizations.

The objective and ultimate assignment objectives are: –

a) Understand the importance of adopting clean energy interventions within the Fairtrade System for both workers and farm management.

b) Understand the importance of clean energy interventions to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and relevant development agendas.

c) Understand the core elements required to develop clean energy intervention/action plans at the Hired Labour Organization and Small Producer Organization setup.

3. Proposed Deliverables

The consultant is expected to undertake the assignment within the specified timeline to deliver the below:

a) Soft copy of a designed quality training manual on clean energy interventions for social-economic, health and environmental benefits within the fairtrade system for hired labour and small producer organizations for use by the training of trainers (TOTs) who are basically farmers and workers in the tea, coffee and flower sectors.

b) Printed copies of the designed quality training manual with specifications as;

Design and layout

· Well-designed cover showcasing the manual’s theme

· Creative design and layout of the final training manual

· Size of the training manual should be B5

· Stock images (photos, infographics, illustrations, etc.) to be used on the documents in line with Fairtrade Africa guidelines to enhance the look and feel of the document.

Printing

· Printing of 100 copies of B5 size

· Hardcover for front and back pages, inner pages (90-100 gsm) Matte paper with perfect binding

Note; Printing will take place after FTA has reviewed and approved the final training manual

c) Training of the selected TOTs on the content of the approved manual. The topics from the manual should not be limited to the below;

i. Rationale for adopting clean energy interventions within the Fairtrade System for workers and farm management.

ii. Issues and Challenges Facing the Hired Labour Organization and Small Producer Organizations in the adopting/introduction of the clean energy interventions within the farm level and among the workforce, and communities.

iii. Removing the Barriers to Advance the adoption of clean energy interventions, strategies and technologies within the Fairtrade System.

iv. Developing the Clean Energy Action Plans for the Hired Labour Organization and Small Producer Organizations within the Fairtrade System. (Energy efficiency and conservation for PO and Developing clean energy strategies/plans for workers and communities.)

v. Linking clean energy interventions at the farm level to the Sustainable Development Goals.

vi. Tapping clean energy-related opportunities at the farm level including the carbon credit acquisition strategies within the fairtrade certified producer organizations.

vii. Tips to Implement the Course as a Train-the-Trainer Model, Facilitation Skills, Training Methods and Materials.

Any image or photo used in the manual, source and who should be credited must be well stated. Copyright rights-related issues and plagiarism will lead to automatic disqualification and/ or termination of the contract and subsequent refund of the 1st instalment paid upon signing the contract.

4. Consultancy Requirements

The successful firm/institution/individual must bear the following:

a) A bachelor’s degree in natural resource management or environmental issues or climate change or ecology or any other related field.

b) Possess at least seven (7) years of experience working in clean/renewable energy or natural resource management or environmental issues or climate change or ecology-related sector

c) Previous experience in developing training manuals for training of trainers is key. Provide at least 2 samples of similar training manuals developed either as an individual or institution or co-author within the last five years.

d) Knowledge and experience implementing projects focusing on clean energy, climate change, and environmental conservation.

e) Experience in curriculum development for the training of trainers will be an added advantage.

f) Demonstrated combination of a team of experts such as training module developer, creative designer and layout expert and printing service provider, however, with the lead person or institution as the applicant or contact person

5. Procedure for Application

Interested consultants are requested to submit applications to Fairtrade Africa while attaching the following documents by close of business on 19th April 2022:

· Cover letter

· Technical Proposal (including methodology and detailed work plan)

· Proposed budget – to include the total cost for the assignment in local currency (KES) and also converted into Euros. The budget should include all the applicable taxes as per Kenya laws

· CV of the consultant (s) that will be involved in the assignment

· At least 3 referees for contact persons in International NGOs, Accredited Academic or Relevant Research Institutions where any work of similar nature has been conducted within the last 5 years.

It is anticipated that the assignment will be conducted and completed on 15th May 2022.
