About us

The HALO Trust is the world’s largest and oldest international humanitarian mine action non-government organisation (NGO). Our mission is to lead the effort to save lives and restore livelihoods for those affected by conflict. HALO is known for its work to clear landmines but is very much involved in the disposal of other explosive hazards such as bombs, rockets, missiles, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). HALO was established in Afghanistan in 1988 and now employs over 9,500 staff in 26 countries and territories.

HALO USA is recruiting for a Development Associate (we call it a Philanthropy Associate here at HALO) to serve as a key member of the US development/philanthropy team and will be responsible for all functions of successful account management and grants development including the identification of opportunities, and securing funding from private foundations, individuals, or corporations. He or she will support the management of gold standard account management, ongoing communications, stewardship, reporting, grant development, and financial reporting, and with outstanding marketing / communication.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the growth of HALO’s portfolio of private partnership or grant relationships through the development and delivery of relationship strategies.
  • Support key components of the strategic account plans for HALO’s US new partnerships, by working with the philanthropy team and other key internal stakeholders, including Executive Director, Ambassadors, CEO or trustees.
  • Support the cultivation of key donor relationships, providing excellence in donor stewardship.
  • Support the development and management of a portfolio of prospective donors, through the various cultivation phases and ultimately secure new funding in line with HALO’s strategic funding priorities and US prospect list.
  • Work with international country programme teams to ensure the development of high-quality proposals and reports.
  • Develop and submit proposals to support the HALO’s projects and programs, strategic initiatives, equipment needs, and operations on an annual basis.
  • Responsible for the financial tracking and accounting of account or grant-related project expenses to generate precise reports to partners.
  • Liaison with Finance for expenditure grant reporting and in resolving issues and assisting in problem-solving efforts relevant to managed grants and programs.
  • Conduct research to identify private foundations, public and corporate sources, and community organizations that provide grants or philanthropic support for mission or project-related activities or operational funding.
  • Manage donor records and correspondence in Salesforce.
  • Provide support to key priority areas of work, such as HNW event planning, engagement, webinars, HALO US Ambassador engagement, or communication activities, as needed.
  • Representing HALO at events (virtual or in person) related to program of work or around key partner/donor accounts
  • Work closely with UK Colleagues as part of a distributed team to provide support to global fundraising and philanthropic efforts
  • Lead in creating communications tied to cultivating, presenting, and soliciting donors and encourage repeat and increased giving year-over-year.
  • Track and cultivate donors and prospects using screening tools, due diligence, and moves management.
  • Prepare and execute stewardship touchpoints, and mailings, as needed.
  • Develop updates, briefs, slide decks, and reports in support of the HALO USA Development Committee meetings and HALO USA Board meetings.
  • Deputize for the Grants Manager for HALO USA, when required.

Skills Requirements and Essential Qualities

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience in non-profit organizations, in fund development/fundraising space.
  • Outstanding research and writing skills with the ability to design robust project proposals, reporting, concept notes, LOIs, case studies, and other comms/marketing tactics.
  • An excellent communicator with the ability to create high-quality and inspiring content.
  • Confident in working with financial information including project budgets
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with strong attention to detail
  • Experience in working with a fundraising database
  • Strong interpersonal skills and desire to build external relationships, a self-starter, goal-oriented, and able to initiate donor visits, communication, presentations, and events.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to demonstrate tact, sophistication, and gravitas
  • A commitment to HALO’s mission and objectives
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and the ability to articulate HALO’s various programmes and strategies in a compelling way
  • Tenacious, self-starting, and able to thrive in a fluid, entrepreneurial context
  • Collaborative, team player, with a good sense of humor and a low ego
  • Outstanding project management skills

This role is located in Washington DC and requires you to be in the HALO Washington DC office 3 days a week. This role requires you to be a U.S. citizen or hold the Right to Work in the USA. The HALO Trust USA employee benefits for full-time employees include:

Vacation Time: 25 days (5 weeks) paid vacation (PTO) accrued at 16.667 hours per month.

Sick Leave: 5 days (1 week) paid Sick-Leave. Sick Leave cannot be ‘carried-over’ to the next year.

Holidays: HALO USA observes all USA Federal holidays.

Savings Plan: A 401(k) retirement savings plan is offered to our employees, but managed entirely through our Payroll provider, Insperity. HALO USA will ‘match’ up to 5% of an employee’s contributed monthly savings to their 401(k) account.
