The Order of St John (“the Order”) is an international humanitarian organization that provides community-based first aid, healthcare and support services worldwide. This charitable work is carried out through support of St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group and other St John organizations. Recognized as an NGO by the United Nations, the Order has a history dating back over 900 years.

The Priory in the USA (“the Priory”) is one of the Order of St John’s eleven priories around the world. With 1,600 members, the Priory’s primary mission is support of St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group. The Priory is seeking an experienced and energetic Development and Communications Director in its Washington, DC, office.

The Development and Communications Director will execute the National Development Committee’s strategic plan which encompasses all areas of traditional fundraising, including major gifts, foundation grant seeking, corporate sponsorships, and planned giving. The Development and Communications Director will also create and execute a communications strategy that addresses the Priory’s different audiences (Priory Members, external donors and potential donors). The Director works closely with the National Development Committee, the Executive Director and the Priory’s leadership in all development, fundraising and communications endeavors.

Responsibilities and Duties

Fundraising (60%-65%)

In collaboration with the National Development Committee (NDC) and others, implement the Priory’s four-year strategic development plan Engage members of the Priory’s leadership, Executive Director, and others to identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward current and potential donors Responsible for maintaining and further developing relationships with institutional donors Oversee grant seeking, including research, proposal writing and reporting requirements Develop and implement effective fundraising appeals (both written and online) that will lead to sustained and upgraded giving Foster the U.S. Priory’s planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequests Meet with prospective donors and supporters on a continuous basis to establish effective communications with them In conjunction with the Membership and Events staff coordinate fundraising special events Oversee creation of materials to support fundraising activities Establish and manage fundraising tracking system Staff NDC meetings in collaboration with Committee chair, and support Regional Development Chairs to ensure alignment with the NDC strategic development plan Perform other related duties as requested

Communications (35%-40%)

Shape, manage and drive the implementation of an effective outreach and communications program to educate Members of the U.S. Priory internally, and interested parties externally, about the Priory’s mission In collaboration with the Priory’s Communications Committee, create, write, edit, and produce printed and digital materials, including the Annual Report, videos, and publications Update and maintain the Priory’s website and social media YourMembership.
