Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, the Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children and young people.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. We are looking for a Deputy National Director who will be responsible for leading, managing, and coordinating fund development, advocacy, and communications, humanitarian response programs, construction works and procurement & logistics of the National Association. In addition, the job incumbent is responsible to assume the role of the National Director in his/her absence.

Your role….

As a Deputy National Director, you will be in charge of the following:

Planning, budget management and reporting

  • Supporting in the strategic planning processes to ensure sustainability and relevance of the NA’s work;
  • Ensuring the required resources and budget are allocated to the departments and units under his/her supervision
  • Ensuring that resources and budget are utilized efficiently and accountably
  • Monitoring and evaluating the quality and progress of programme/project interventions through supportive supervision, internal program audits, and review of and feedback to project reports, statistics, and self-evaluation results to ensure that interventions are in line with organizational plans, standards, and policies, and with national legislation.
  • Collaborating with the National MERA Coordinator in supporting regional quality audits and external evaluations. Advises and supports the implementation of recommendations.

Advocacy and Communications

  • Leading the development of national advocacy and communications strategy;
  • Ensuring that the National Association has clear and measurable goals for Advocacy and communication that are in line with the initiatives of the international and national strategic plan;
  • Establishing sound relationships with relevant government authorities ensures appropriate representation of the organization’s views and seeks government recognition and support for SOS Children’s Villages work
  • Leading the organization’s effort to position itself as a child rights advocate and driving the process of MA’s brand strengthening and anchoring;
  • Ensuring application of the internationally agreed brand development concept in national strategy, planning and implementation;
  • Living the brand and the mission and make it come alive and lead toward adding value to the core vision of SOS Children’s Villages by building, continuously improving, and maintaining efficient internal and external information and communication networks;
  • Ensuring coherent messaging and branding, aligned position statements and drive capacity building in the National Association in the area of external communication (incl. Crisis Communication)
  • Pursuing advocacy objectives in child safeguarding forums and in partnership with other NGOs, GOs and other relevant stakeholders joining together to bring our mission for children and young people to life
  • Supporting public relations/marketing activities as necessary and ensuring that an appropriate image of the organisation is portrayed;

Fund Development

  • Leading the development and implementation of sustainable fundraising strategies in the Member Associations and ensuring support in the development and monitoring of fundraising investment applications.
  • Promoting long-term financial stability and program self-sufficiency by pursuing support from government and private sources to maximize the fundraising potential
  • Enabling support in the area of digital fundraising (e.g. technical setup, expert advice, tools)

Humanitarian Response Program

  • Ensuring proper support is provided for emergency programmes at national level and positive collaboration and working relationship maintained with government institutions and a good public image of the organisation.
  • Ensuring that SOS CVE actively participates in the various drought response clusters with NGOs, UN agencies and government offices.
  • Carrying out exploratory missions in order to identify potential fields of intervention and lead on situation analysis and programme proposal development
  • Supervising the financial management and ensuring that all reporting deadlines and donor/SOS CV procedures are respected.
  • Ensuring proper planning and coordination of all resources (human, material and financial) needed for the emergency interventions in the country is in place.
  • Ensuring adherence to SOS CV policies such as the Code of Conduct, Child Safeguarding Standards and others as well as the minimum standards of humanitarian relief (ICRC Code of Conduct, Sphere, HAP).
  • Monitoring and analyzing the political, humanitarian and general situation across the country and surrounding countries through established contacts with key persons/institutions.
  • Ensuring information flow and reporting to and from National Director, Global Emergency Response (GER) Unit and Project Coordinators. Work in close collaboration with other members of the SOS CV team, sharing information and designing and implementing program activities.

Procurement, Liaison & logistics Management

  • Overseeing that’s procurements in the MA are conducted as per the existing procedure in a planned and coordinated manner.
  • Developing, consolidating and tracking annual procurement plans for the MA and ensuring timely implementation.
  • Supporting the development of a procurement and training committee to handle MA procurements requirements.
  • Ensuring effective use of the consolidated plan for task assignment, sourcing decisions, coordination for bulk purchases, timely procurements for budget utilizations, etc.
  • Ensuring that all emergency related procurements are responded to in a timely and flexible manner
  • Ensuring an efficient logistics management system is in place to provide timely support for programmes
  • Ensuring procurement vendor records are timely and accurately set up and updated within SOS CVE system.
  • Ensuring SOS CVE compliance with donor rules and regulations in procurement function;

Construction works of the MA

  • Overseeing construction, renovation works of the MA with the technical support of the construction coordinator.
  • Ensuring that all construction and renovation works are conducted as per the SOS relevant guidelines
  • Ensuring that sufficient resource is earmarked to ensure the durability of SOS Properties through proactive maintenance inspections ( building, Family houses)

Child Safeguarding (CS)

  • Ensuring that Child Safeguarding measures are in place and that staff, associates and other key stakeholders are made aware of these measures and are supported in implementing them
  • Ensuring that Child safeguarding is integrated in all management processes including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, team meetings, annual planning processes, field-level monitoring, IWP, IDP etc
  • Ensuring that co-workers and programmes do not cause harm to children and young people and that they are not exposed to the risk of harm and abuse
  • Reporting any concerns the organization has about children’s safety in its programmes and within the communities to the appropriate authorities
  • Creating and maintaining a managerial and operational environment where the Child Safeguarding Policy is effectively implemented.
  • Ensuring that co-workers act within national law, Child Protection Policy, Code of Conduct and other child safeguarding requirements
  • Fulfilling specific and additional responsibilities in achieving compliance of SOS Children’s Villages Child Protection Policy.
  • Ensuring the best interest of the child is applied and considered

The must haves:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Developmental studies, or related Social Science discipline from a recognised University
  • Minimum 7 years leadership experience at a senior management , preferably within the International NGO
  • Prior leadership experience in one or more of the following functional areas: human resource management, Programme/Project Management, Community Development leadership
  • Fluency in English and Ahmaric languages
  • Hands-on computer software skills (Word, Excel, Database etc.)
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally as required
  • Working knowledge in all areas of child rights, child protection, child development, family & community development and rights-based programming in developing country
  • Notable success working with and building high performance and successful teams in a multi-cultural setting
  • Strong influential, be an articulate and confident manager able to spur confidence in the organization, working closely with the Sinor Management of Trustees.
  • Excellent networking ability, persuasive communication, marketing and fundraising skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills;
  • Exceptional ability to communicate consistently, clearly and effectively with a range of stakeholders;
  • Strong set of personal values including integrity, honesty and desire to be of service.
