Overview: DT Global is seeking a Deputy Director of Business Development to join the Economic Development, Governance, and Environment (EDGE) Practice. The Deputy Director will assist with developing and guiding the business development strategy for the EDGE Practice and will help lead business development (BD) team members. In collaboration with the Director of Business Development, the Deputy Director will lead new business efforts from designing overall BD strategy for the unit, supporting technical leads to build the BD pipeline, to capture planning and proposal submission. They will also be expected to serve in various proposal roles such as proposal director, technical writer, and reviewer. The Deputy Director will oversee proposal teams, coordinate with internal departments and ensure appropriate resourcing, direct the design and approach of proposals, and support the development of BD team members. This position will report to the Director of Business Development for the EDGE Practice and will be based in Washington, D.C., with remote locations considered on a case by case basis.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with developing and leading the business development strategy for the practice area
  • Analyze client preferences and technical sector trends to advise BD and proposal strategy
  • Evaluate business development forecasts and support technical leads (Economic Growth, Climate Change, WASH, Energy, Governance), make go/no-go decisions, plan and execute capture trips, lead pre-positioning efforts, and ensure compliance on all proposal submissions for the practice area
  • Support technical leads develop annual priorities for BD and position for strategic opportunities
  • Lead and coordinate proposal teams, including managing team members, directing the approach and design of bids, and serving as technical writer and reviewer
  • Create capture plans that strategically assess bids, draw on all available company resources, and result in winning bid plans
  • Develop and execute bid initiatives that advance DT Global’s position over competitors
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with technical specialists, subject matter experts, and professional writers to contribute to technical solution designs, reviews, and analysis of proposals and business development strategy within the practice area
  • Work closely with the practice area’s assigned recruiter to deepen DT Global’s network of potential personnel and better understand client staffing needs
  • Support technical leads position DT Global as a leader in the relevant technical areas through strategic partnerships, thought leadership events, and participation at industry events.
  • Represent DT Global at strategic business development, technical sector, or industry events and conferences
  • Support and encourage the professional development of all business development team members
  • Contribute to global business development efforts with DT Global’s Spain and Australia offices

Education & Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in international development, international relations, or a related field; or equivalent combination or education and experience
  • Minimum 9 years of experience in international development, including at least 5 years of experience leading business development strategy for USAID and other donors, with demonstrated experience managing proposal teams and executing winning bids
  • Strong experience serving in multiple proposal roles, including capture and proposal manager, technical writer, and reviewer
  • Experience in one or more of the technical areas of the practice including economic growth, governance, WASH, energy, climate change, and environment.
  • Extensive experience and deep understanding of USAID proposal management, USAID rules and mechanisms, the competitive environment, implementing partners, and a strong network of experts in the field across various skill areas
  • Demonstrated experience traveling for new business capture trips; experience living and working in international development preferred.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with colleagues, donors, consultants, and technical experts
  • Experience mentoring, developing, and training staff in business development topics
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to multitask and complete objectives, often with inflexible and tight deadlines
  • Ability to travel internationally on short notice

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in international development, international relations, or a related field
  • Past experience leading programs economic growth, governance, WASH, energy, climate change, or environment.
  • Fluency in another language, preferably Spanish, French, or Arabic
