The Deputy Country Director will provide general management of all programming for South Sudan, including grantor relations, government relations, project cycle and direct line management of the Area Coordinators, and oversight of the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning team. Based in Juba, the Deputy Country Director will serve as a member of the Senior Management Team and will be required to travel to field site frequently, providing reports back to the Country Director. A day in the life of a Deputy Country Director:

In the role of Deputy Country Director, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Maintain your personal relationship with Jesus Christ and be an effective witness for Him
  • Provide leadership, management, and strategic direction for all programs, including donor awards and internally funded initiatives. This includes overseeing Area Coordinators, the Learning & Strategic Development Director, and the Monitor, Evaluation, and Learning team, and working with Program Managers, Grants Manager, and others to ensure all grants, awards and internally funded programs are implemented according to organizational field operating guidelines and policies
  • Monitor humanitarian crises in South Sudan, perform field assessments when necessary, and advise the Country Director of potential response options
  • Ensure strong relationships are formed and maintained within cluster and coordination bodies in South Sudan. This will ensure that SP maintains an influential role in the country and remains invited to high-level forums and discussions
  • Be a spiritual leader for national and international staff
  • Host VIP trips including media personnel, government officials, dignitaries, donors and IHQ visitors. When needed, represent Samaritan’s Purse with journalists and media outlets
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous experience working internationally, particularly in Africa
  • Field level management experience
  • Experience in leading a large team
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Networking skills
  • Knowledge of project planning and implementation
  • Experienced in cross-cultural team leadership
  • Understanding and experience in logistics
  • Experience of financial and administrative coordination.
  • Ability to operate for extended periods in austere conditions
  • Willingness to travel frequently and stay in the field for extended periods
  • Ability to coordinate activities with local involvement and NGO networks
  • Good teammate and able to live and work closely with others.
  • Ability to drive a standard transmission vehicle in rough road and extremely muddy conditions
  • Twelve credit hours of college-level Biblical studies (required)

Travel Expectations: Frequent travel to the field and remote locations; required travel documents and vaccinations for entry into foreign countries will be necessary
