Micronutrient Forum

Background

Food fortification is one of the great success stories in global health. Using commonly eaten foods such as flour, salt, and rice to deliver much-needed vitamins and minerals has saved and improved the lives of billions of people worldwide. Despite this incredible impact to date, fortification can do even more to reach new populations with micronutrients. Making timely and trustworthy data available to policymakers, program implementers, and advocates is a key bottleneck in increasing the impact of fortification and exactly what the Global Fortification Data Exchange aims to do.

The Global Fortification Data Exchange (GFDx, FortificationData.org) is the definitive source of information on large-scale food fortification programs, focusing on commonly fortified staple foods and condiments (maize flour, oil, rice, salt, and wheat flour). GFDx standardizes the collection of national data on the status of fortification legislation, standards, food availability/intake, quality, and coverage of these fortified staple foods and condiments throughout the world. These data are presented on the GFDx website through country dashboards, foundational documents, program performance, and fortification opportunities. GFDx is increasingly becoming a global resource because it is focused on areas that are not adequately addressed by other tools, specifically being focused on fortification, and seeking to increase access to data.

GFDx is currently rebuilding the infrastructure and front end of the website using a serviceoriented architecture approach, moving from proprietary software to open-source and industry-leading providers. This transition involves migrating to a new database, recreating visualizations in Tableau, and implementing a new UI/UX through WordPress.
