Data Science Manager

As a Data Science Manager, you will develop AI, Data Science and Machine Learning solutions aligned to our customer plan, enabling us to bring data to life and to deliver measurable ROI through the commercial application of data science to customer and business problems. The role will rapidly increase our data and data science capability is a critical area of transformation and your knowledge and experience will be critical in shaping the future. As a Data Science Manager, you will hire, retain and coach team members, ensuring they are thriving in their role within the team.

Your Role

The role of Data Science Manager involves leading an established team of technical, highly skilled data scientists, owning and developing your team workplan. Specifically, you will;

Develop and manage a data science team with different backgrounds, leading multi-disciplinary squads to complete data science projects to a high standard in a fast paced, high frequency retail environment. You will be involved in developing new models, segmentation, data services across the end-to-end project lifecycle. The role liaises with and manage stakeholders to understand and define requirements, and manage delivery against agreed timelines. The Data Science Manager works as part of the Decision Science & Analytics – AI Build Management Team and has a passion for innovative data and machine learning applications to drive profitable outcomes for our customers and business.

You will have proven line management experience of high performing data scientists who have built and operationalised data solutions and the ability to tell a compelling data led story internally and externally. The role requires proven experience of the application of statistical methods to solve data science problems and data visualisation and experience in applying data science to customer facing outcomes, ideally in a high volume retail / ecommerce environment.

Knowledge

As a Data Science Manager, you will have the proven skills and experience to manage the delivery of AI, Data Science and Machine Learning projects, manage and develop a high-performing team aligned to a specific area across; reporting, visualisation & simulation, customer engagement, omnichannel personalisation, foundational data science & machine learning, digital analytics, marketing effectiveness/econometrics. You will be able to bring a cloud first approach to your work and be an evangelist for data science and support colleagues in understanding where the biggest opportunities are for the application of data science and machine learning.

Communicating and Influencing

The role requires you to liaise with and manage stakeholders to understand and define requirements, and manage delivery against agreed timelines. You will share data and findings with the wider teams. You will support the execution of our wider Data and ML strategy, with a focus on Customer, in particular scanning for opportunities to apply data science and machine learning to solve high value problems. You will build strong relationships within the data, data science and analytics community within Asda to learn, share and benefit from the wider data community and Asda Data Academy.

Freedom to Think and Act

You will stay up to date with current trends in AI, Data Science and Machine Learning, and co-lead a practice area within the Asda Data Academy and further our competitive advantage in data science through participation in our R&D activity, developing our data science methods and technology stack. You will champion consistent approaches and standards in your team, working with your peers and beyond to remove duplication, and collaborating with the wider data community

Experience

You will have a wealth of experience to demonstrate advocacy for Asda’s Data Science with your key stakeholder group and the wider data community and input into the development of new AI and ML tooling and technology strategy across Asda
