ABOUT IREX

IREX is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to building a more just, prosperous, and inclusive world by empowering youth, cultivating leaders, strengthening institutions, and extending access to quality education and information.

POSITION SUMMARY

IREX is seeking a Data Journalism trainer to design and deliver a series of workshops and courses for Syrian media partners through IREX’s Supporting Independent Media in Syria II (SIMS-II) program. IREX has several partners (radio, TV and online) that produce Arabic-language broadcasts, including current affairs and news programs, to Syrian audiences.

The trainer will introduce the tools and core skills of data journalism. The partner radio and TV stations need data journalism to become a core part of their journalist’s toolkit. The courses should allow participants the opportunity to learn how to make data journalism a central part of their workflow.

The course will introduce data journalism using case studies and real-life examples of the trainer’s work. It should include finding and analyzing open-source data sets, which are relevant to the partner’s work and region, using online tools to search, sort and interrogate the data sets, using spreadsheets to produce information that can be turned into data visualization and an introduction to analyzing business and financial records. The trainer will be expected to incorporate relevant exercises into the workshops which can be used by the partner organizations. The workshops will be carried out online.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designing a series of workshops on data journalism.
  • Delivering the workshops to the partner organizations.
  • Working with the partner organizations to introduce data journalism into the daily workflow of the newsroom.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least five years’ experience working in data journalism.
