This position is funded for an initial period of one year, extension of appointment will be subject to budgetary approval. Organizational setting and reporting relationships:

The position is located in the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) within the Performance Management Section. The incumbent will be based in Nairobi and reports to the Chief, Performance Management Section.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Within delegated authority, the Data Engineer will be responsible for the following duties:

· Manage individual projects regarding the optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of sources into data pipelines, as well as the creation and maintenance of data catalogues.

· Design and develop solutions for data-related technical problems and data infrastructure needs surfaced by Executive, Analytics and Design teams, create data models that can be used by different stakeholders at different levels.

· Manage the identification, design, and implementation of internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing architecture for greater scalability.

· Deploy resources to extract data features from complex datasets for data scientists and data analysts.

· Manage the implementation of changes to data systems to ensure compliance with data governance, protection, privacy, and security requirements.

Qualification and Experience:

Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, data management, information systems, information science or a related quantitative field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: A minimum of five (05) years of progressively responsible experience in any of the following areas: computer programming, data science or machine learning.

Experience in data management, data integration, data modelling, data optimization and other relevant areas is required.

Experience in designing data integration and pipeline architectures, which must include ingesting data through different methods such as message queues, database query languages (SQL, etc.), flat files, REST, or specific APIs, is required.

Experience working with self-service analytics applications like Microsoft PowerBI, Tableau, Qlik and others for data discovery is desirable.

Experience supporting cross-functional teams and collaborating with stakeholders in support of data analytics initiatives is desirable.

Experience in programming languages such as Python or R is desirable.

Experience with cloud services such as Microsoft Azure or Amazon AWS is desirable.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.

Assessment Method: Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
