Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Data Analyst to help lead the Finance Division’s efforts to analyze data and deliver enhanced insights to improve finance strategy and process. This position reports to the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Senior Associate Director who is based in Colorado, U.S.A.

The location of this position is flexible and can be based in any office location, but time zones with shared office hours to Eastern Standard Time will be preferred.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely as local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the COVID-19 pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

*Responsibilities:*

  1. Manage all financial data activities, including supporting the FP&A team by maintaining, monitoring, and analyzing personnel and other financial data and their relationships across systems.

  2. Define an approach to data governance with a focus on creating data standards and processes that will be a model for the organization.

  3. Identify areas for systems integration to improve speed/latency, increase efficiencies, reduce redundancies and errors, and remove data quality problems in close partnership with the Information Technology (IT) team.

  4. Build new and maintain existing Power BI reports, dashboards, data models, and dataflows that map and model impact of revenue and expense trends and projections.

  5. Leverage data mining, coding, visualization, and analytical techniques to contribute to and co-create innovative financial approaches and solutions that optimize financial performance and align financials to organizational strategy.

  6. Identify, design, and help implement a roadmap for the FP&A team to move the organization to a data-centered approach, from both a technical and business perspective.

  7. Influence by delivering valuable insights and recommendations to improve finance strategy and process, with modeling, storytelling, visualization, and statistical skills.

  8. Communicate complex modeling processes and results to key financial stakeholders and non-finance audiences alike.

  9. Keep abreast of machine learning, financial planning best practices, and industry developments to incorporate best in class modeling methodologies.

  10. Perform additional tasks as required by the FP&A Senior Associate Director.

Qualifications

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in finance, mathematics, business, or computer science is required.

Experience: 5 years of related experience in data and analytics or business intelligence with experience in finance a plus. Prior experience working in nonprofit/NGO finance is highly desirable. An advanced degree in data and analytics, business intelligence, or related field will be considered in lieu of years’ experience working.

We are eager to hear from candidates who can perform the essential functions of this role even if they do not meet all of our desired qualifications – particularly if they are from backgrounds underrepresented in NGO sectors.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

Required

  1. Previous experience in and/or demonstrated knowledge of data analysis.
  2. Coding skills and core mathematical ability to understand, utilize and machine learning algorithms and statistical modeling (Python, R or similar query language experience).
  3. Experience with data warehouses or relational databases, including awareness of how modern data infrastructure works and being comfortable with a variety of data structures.
  4. Familiarity with cloud engineering and database architecture.
  5. Excellent computer knowledge, including advanced proficiency with Microsoft applications such as PowerBI.
  6. Strong project management skills for managing multiple project streams and complexity.
  7. Self-motivation and the ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision, and work independently as well as function as a member of a team.
  8. Excellent communication, creative problem-solving, and strong organization skills.
  9. Effective oral and written communications skills in English.
  10. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously.
  11. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions.

Strongly Preferred

  1. Experience with Oracle NetSuite financial accounting system, PBCS, and/or Salesforce, is preferred.
  2. Proven interest in human rights is desirable.
