Salary: HQ6 – Starting salary for this role will be $76,000 commensurate on experience.

The Program / Department / Team

The mission of the Resource Development (RD) department is to advance the organization’s strategic goals and support our worldwide team by raising flexible funds, profile and influence. The RD team encompasses several dozen dynamic professionals who possess a wide range of skills. We are gift officers, direct response fundraisers, web developers, marketers and media relations strategists. We are database managers, digital specialists, creative designers, storytellers and teachers. Most of all, we are passionate about Mercy Corps’ mission and believe a better world is possible.

The Position

The Crypto and Community Fundraising Manager is a highly collaborative role that sits on the Mass Market Fundraising team and will work in partnership with our High Impact Philanthropy, Corporate Partnerships teams, Social Ventures, and Marketing and Communications teams to lead the development and implementation of the strategies for our crypto and NFT-fundraising and community giving programs for mass market and mid-level audiences. They will use a multi-channel approach, developing new and creative ways of expanding these programs, and engaging with a diverse demographic of donors based on their interests and giving trends.

They will execute activities – including personal 1:1 outreach, coordination of events (in-person and virtual), and the development of targeted campaigns – to steward and cultivate relationships with target donor audiences, heighten awareness and understanding of Mercy Corps, develop innovative ways to link target donors with the organization, and secure funds from these donors to support the work of Mercy Corps globally.

Essential Responsibilities

CRYPTO & COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING STRATEGY

  • Support development and implementation of annual and multi-year strategies with campaigns to maximize growth in non-fungible token (NFT), crypto, and community fundraising programs.
  • Support the development of campaign, communication, and engagement plans for priority audiences, such as high-value community fundraisers, relevant company employees (tech, finance, etc.), The Giving Block, Gaming, and NFT and crypto investor communities, including stewardship and relationship management planning.
  • Research and identify trends in NFT, crypto and community fundraising programs and bring new ideas to the team; optimize opportunities in other channels and initiatives to support program goals and drive revenue (ads, content, engagement crypto community via Twitter, Discord, etc.).
  • Lead on the design and execution of a comprehensive events (virtual and in-person) strategy that provides a variety of unique and creative touchpoints for priority MMF audiences (mid-level, donor-advised funds, NFT, crypto, and community fundraising donors); work collaboratively across RD teams on donor event strategy and planning.
  • Create a variety of communication materials for internal and external facing audiences, including website content, meeting briefs, invitations, run-of-show, talking points, presentations, FAQs, fact sheets, online event kits, how-tos and instructions, etc.
  • Develop and document lessons learned, challenges, and best practices to inform future planning and priorities.

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

  • Conduct ongoing, personalized outreach to assigned donors and prospects via phone, email, mail, texting, in-person, and on social media (Twitter, Discord, etc.), with the goal of strengthening the donors’ engagement with and commitment to the organization.
  • Respond to incoming inquiries about crypto and community fundraising efforts and partnership requests.
  • Provide appropriate support, materials, and acknowledgement to all NFT, crypto and community fundraisers and identified donors.
  • As appropriate, attend high value or high visibility community fundraising events and coordinate volunteers and materials as needed.

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT & OPERATIONS

  • Support the development of annual budgets, revenue goals, and the projection, tracking and approval of expenses across programs for both community and crypto fundraising programs.
  • Support management of constituent data in Raiser’s Edge, including data entry, and developing and maintaining efficient data systems for the community fundraising and crypto audience segments.
  • Ensure excellent program quality by regularly monitoring, troubleshooting issues, and reviewing all data for accuracy; regularly evaluate systems and processes to ensure maximum efficiency and revenue.
  • Work with Development Operations team members to assess and implement improvements to existing backend processes and policies, including fundraising and financial compliance policies, payment options, and with vendors.
  • Analyze and report on progress to goals and effectiveness of specific campaigns, tactics and vendor performance; adapt plans based on analysis.

Works Directly With: Sr. Director of Strategic Partnerships and Philanthropy; Managing Director of High Impact Philanthropy; Mass Market Fundraising team; Digital Marketing team; Brand Marketing team; Development Operations team; Social Ventures team.

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Minimum Qualifications & Transferable Skills

  • College degree or equivalent in a related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a non-profit setting, preferably in a large, fast-paced fundraising operation.
  • Proven track record of working in a forward-facing role and knowledge of donor relationship management/customer service practices.
  • Working knowledge of cryptocurrency, crypto-philanthropy, NFTs, gaming, and social media platforms such as Twitter, Twitch, and Discord required.
  • Exceptionally strong verbal and written communications skills and organizational skills are required.
  • Proven ability to effectively build interpersonal relationships with a wide range of constituents.
  • Well-developed collaboration skills to lead and work with cross-functional teams; demonstrated ability of leading projects that involve multiple departments, consultants and vendors.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and goals, communicate with precision and clarity, motivate others and enlist them to meet goals.
  • Experience organizing small and medium sized-events and campaigns.
  • Track record of exemplary problem-solving and developing innovative solutions to achieve goals. Demonstrated track record of translating ideas into action.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
  • Working knowledge of constituent management database (Raiser’s Edge preferred) and online peer-to-peer fundraising software (such as Donor Drive).
  • A demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and adaptable, and to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible approach and an ability to operate effectively amidst change.
  • Experience or interest in international development preferred.

Success Factors

The successful Crypto & Community Fundraising Manager will be self-motivated, take initiative, and have a bias toward execution. An entrepreneurial spirit and creative mind are key. They will be able to work well under pressure, respond quickly to new opportunities, and creatively resolve problems as well as establish and maintain positive relationships with co-workers, donors, partners and vendors. With a strong background in customer/donor experience and relationship management, the ideal candidate will be able to foresee opportunities to improve and proactively address the donor journey. They will have experience working in matrix-organizations and cross-functional teams and possess collaborative leadership skills. High integrity and a passion for the mission of Mercy Corps are a must.

Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions

The position can be based in Portland, OR (hybrid) preferred; Seattle, WA (remote) or the San Francisco Bay Area (remote) also considered. Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends, particularly during emergency fundraising moments. Occasional regional travel may be required.
