Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is currently seeking a talented professional for the role of a Ukraine Crisis Communications Manager. The Ukraine Crisis Communications Manager ensures that communications about Habitat for Humanity’s response to the Ukraine crisis reflects the organization’s response strategy, helps generate support for that response and increases awareness of Habitat’s disaster and emergency response work. The Communications Manager does so by coordinating closely with both Habitat organizations responding to the crisis as well as those Habitat organizations raising support for the response.

The Communications Manager maintains clear communications goals related to the crisis, promotes a compelling narrative around Habitat’s response across geographies, and coordinates with communications staff across the Habitat network to help tell the story of Habitat’s response in keeping with the organization’s communications standards and brand. This person works closely with the leadership of Habitat’s Ukraine response as well as colleagues in the larger Global Communications department.

This position will be based in Bratislava, Slovakia or Warsaw, Poland with up to 25% travel.

ABOUT HABITAT’S RESPONSE TO THE UKRAINE CRISIS:

As millions of refugees flee violence in Ukraine, Habitat for Humanity is on the ground in four neighboring countries – Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia – helping meet the shelter needs of displaced families. We are supporting refugees on the move, supplying them with emergency travel kits and hotel vouchers. Habitat is also working on mid- and long-term accommodations for refugees, by subsidizing rentals, refurbishing communal spaces that can act as shelter and supporting mid-term hosting arrangements with families who have opened up their homes. We also plan to lend our housing and construction expertise to partners who repurpose so-called empty spaces – such as unused schools and factories – to serve as shelter for refugees.

Key Responsibilities:
Work closely with Ukraine response leadership to ensure Habitat communications reflect and help advance the organization’s response strategy.
Coordinate content gathering and storytelling in countries where Habitat is responding to the crisis, taking into account the needs of key internal stakeholders in fundraising, advocacy, marketing and programs.
Reinforce Habitat’s brand and communications standards among content-gatherers, setting clear guiderails around the development of stories, images, videos and other assets.
Review and edit key content and tools such as stories, photos, videos, press releases and talking points.
Distribute communications assets to the Habitat network, gaining feedback of them and adjusting as necessary.
Help coordinate media interviews and other external communications opportunities related to the crisis, including preparation of key spokespeople.

Key Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field.
5+ years of work experience in communications or related area.
Experience with disaster/emergency communications or disaster/emergency response in general.
Proven ability to write, edit, evaluate and curate strong content and design while meeting brand and messaging needs.
Strong communications and problem-solving skills.
Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural competencies and organizational and project management skills that demonstrate an ability to successfully collaborate with a variety of departments and stakeholders.
Active support of HFHI values and commitments:
Humility – We are part of something bigger than ourselves
Courage – We do what’s right, even when it is difficult or unpopular
Accountability – We take personal responsibility for Habitat’s mission
Safeguarding – HFHI requires that all employees take seriously their ethical responsibilities to safeguarding our intended beneficiaries, their communities, and all those with whom we work. Managers at all levels have responsibilities to support and develop systems that create and maintain an environment that prevents harassment, sexual exploitation and abuse, safeguards the rights of beneficiaries and community members (especially children), and promotes the implementation of Habitat for Humanity’s code of conduct.

Preferred:

Previous nonprofit experience.
Experience with international development.
Deep knowledge of central and eastern Europe.
