Overview of position

Under the overall supervision of the Logistics Officer and the direct supervision of the National Fleet Officer in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia, the successful candidate will be responsible for operating the client stationary or traveling crane to lift, move, position, and reposition loads or materials with precision and care, under general supervision

Role objectives

  • Having a critical role in the project ensures the delivery of materials loading and unloading to the barge/ship is done with precision and on schedule.

  • Visualize plan and procedure on how to properly load the materials on ship/barge in order to maximize space and ensure safety.

  • Depresses buttons, lift levers and ensures load is safely attached to crane before bringing it down.

  • Incumbent may be exposed to variable crane positions in different weather conditions and should be able to set blocks and out outriggers to prevent capsizing while lifting heavy loads.

  • Operate and complete minor repairs/maintenance of the client crane or forklift to aid in the loading and unloading of TWRP materials.

  • Follow guidelines/checklists/verbal instructions for consistent safety, maintenance, and cleanliness of vessels.

  • Ensure the crane is in safe working order before and after every use.

  • Manipulate or depress cane controls to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement according to written, verbal or signal instructions.

  • Fill out vehicle/vessel log sheets and other necessary paperwork.

  • Communicate with supervisors and base personnel during missions.

  • Communicate clearly using radio and hand signals with the dogman/helper to ensure accurate load movement and safety equipment, boats, trucks, building materials and especially surrounding personnel.

  • Ensure that any work-related injury caused by crane, forklift, or client vehicle, as well as any damage or threat to security of the aforementioned machines will be documented in an incident report on the same day of the incident and with immediate notification to manager.

  • Help with a variety of TWRP operations especially involving the boat program, warehouse, and distribution, when there is no need for primary responsibilities.

  • May be occasionally required to work on weekends.

  • May be required to operate crane on large distribution vessels and occasionally required to spend several nights at sea.

  • Strictly adhere to client’s policies and procedures including prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse and promotion of a respectful work environment.

  • Undertake work-related travel at the request and approval of the COM.

  • Other duties as assigned and needed to support the program objectives.

Key competencies

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree from technical or trade school with four years of relevant work experience; or

  • High School Certificate with six years of relevant work experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience as a crane operator or a similar role with safe driving record

  • Working experience with handling different types of cranes

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Relevant training, licenses or certificates will be considered favourably

SKILLS

  • Knowledge of fulcrum mechanics and weight displacement

  • Proven understanding of safety and safe crane operation practices

  • Ability to lift heavy loads using the required machines, work in heights and if required work long hours while sitting/standing.

  • Ability to simultaneously control an array of levers and pedals to lift, move and reposition materials as required.
