About the Syria Response programme:

MAG has been responding to the Syria crisis since 2013 working to support and protect conflict affected communities from explosive remnants of war, so that people can restore and pursue their livelihoods in a safe and secure environment, free from fear of death or injury.

About the role:

MAG is recruiting a Country Director to lead our Syria programme. This is an exciting time to join the MAG team, leading emergency response activities and working with relevant partners in a rapidly changing context. Reporting to the Regional Director, you will be responsible for the effective integration of strategic, programmatic and operational management and the development of new business, in compliance with contractual obligations and MAG’s mission and mandate. You will have a wide variety of strategic responsibilities including contract management, donor liaison, business development, people management, security management, capacity building and risk management. This position is based in Hasakah, with frequent travel in the region and to Erbil in Iraq, where MAG Syria also has an office.

About you:

While prior experience in the Mine Action sector is not mandatory, we seek a candidate with extensive overseas experience at a Senior Management level. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record in managing and directing large-scale programs, overseeing implementation, monitoring and evaluation, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring contract compliance. This experience should encompass the management of multi-million and multi-funded projects, demonstrating robust financial management across a diverse grant portfolio. Additionally, candidates should possess the ability to effectively oversee budgets, contribute to new business development, and represent the organization at the highest levels.

Exceptional communication skills are crucial for this role, as the successful candidate will demonstrate a history of cultivating successful relationships and negotiating with donors, government entities, other NGOs, and local partners. A background in leading programs within volatile security environments, preferably in the Middle East, is essential. The candidate should have experience in monitoring and analysing security information, assessing threats, managing critical incidents, and developing security procedures.

The role requires strong people management skills, as the candidate will be responsible for leading teams across HR, Administration, Logistics, and Finance functions.
