Norwegian Refugee Council

NRC is looking for a Country Director to join the North of Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras) mission. The role holder will be responsible for providing both strategic direction and operational leadership to the multi-country operation.

If you are an experienced and seasoned leader with a track record of developing and integrating distinctive strategies; the ability to inspire and influence others; and successful experience building and leading collaborative, engaging, and effective teams, then this is the role for you!

What You Will Do

  • Country strategy development and execution.
  • North of Central America approach contribution.
  • Representation and coordination.
  • Country-level advocacy.
  • Resource allocation and mobilisation.
  • Ensure structures and systems facilitate efficient support to operations.
  • Cost efficiency and quality.
  • Staff learning, training, and development.
  • Safety and security of staff.

What You Will Bring

  • Senior Management / Country Director experience.
  • Humanitarian/recovery/emergency response context experience.
  • El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, and surrounding region, context exposure and knowledge.
  • High risk, insecure, opaque, complex, and volatile context exposure.
  • English and Spanish fluency, both written and verbal.

What Makes This Position Attractive?

  • El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras (the countries constituting North of Central America) are experiencing devastating humanitarian crises. These crises are driven by generalised violence, recurrent extreme weather events, political instability, and other factors. The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance is estimated at a staggering 9.3 million, almost 30 per cent of the overall population.
  • 4.8 million people need protection assistance and over eight million are food insecure. Two years after the devastation of hurricanes Eta and Iota, dramatic weather events forced people to flee; harvest and livelihoods were lost; and vital infrastructure damaged. Meanwhile, the number of people crossing North of Central America and Mexico in extremely dangerous conditions aiming to enter the United States keeps reaching new heights, overwhelming migration and protection authorities.
  • This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that responds to the diverse needs, priorities, and concerns raised by beneficiary communities.
  • NRC has been working in the North of Central America since 2014, meeting the needs of tens of thousands affected by violence and natural disasters, including the internally displaced, refugees, people in need of international protection, deported people, and their hosts.
  • NRC contributes to the development of policy, aiming to protect the rights of the displaced and calls for increased humanitarian funding and engagement on processes that will generate structural changes in protection and assistance in the region. Areas of focus include Education; Information, Counselling, and Legal Assistance; Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene; Livelihoods and Food Security; and Protection from Violence.
  • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to join our work culture that empowers every employee to share ideas and take responsibility.

What We Offer

  • Tegucigalpa, Honduras duty station.
  • 24-months contract duration.
  • 30% travel, approximately.
  • Grade 12 in NRC’s Salary Scale. NRC offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.
  • NRC is an equal opportunities employer. In the selection of our staff, we are committed to diversity without distinction to age, gender, religion, ethnicity, nationality, and physical ability.
  • We think outside the box, encourage ideas, and give responsibility to all employees at all levels. You will have many opportunities to be heard and take the initiative.
