What we are looking for

NRC is looking for a dynamic, motivated, and experienced Country Director to join the Chad mission. The role holder will actively develop NRC’s country strategy, identify and attract a diverse funding portfolio, and further establish NRC as a credible and professional international humanitarian organisation in Chad.

If you are an action-oriented, execution-driven seasoned leader; with a track record of developing and integrating distinctive strategies; as well as strong coordination, networking, and stakeholder management skills; the ability to build constructive relationships with external parties; and has successful experience in building and leading collaborative, engaging, and effective teams; then this is the role for you!

What you will do

  • Position NRC as the new humanitarian actor in Chad.
  • Substantial emergency response leadership.
  • Potential programme expansion.

  • Representation and coordination.
  • Country-level advocacy.
  • Resource allocation and mobilisation.
  • Ensure structures and systems facilitate efficient support to operations.
  • Cost efficiency and quality.
  • Staff learning, training, and development.
  • Safety and security of staff.

What you will bring

  • Senior Management / Country Director track record.
  • Humanitarian/recovery/emergency response context experience.
  • Advocacy expertise.
  • Complex and volatile context exposure.
  • English and French fluency, both written and verbal.

What makes this position attractive?

  • The extreme brutality of Sudan’s war has displaced 9 million people within their own country. This is now the largest war-related displacement crisis in the world, surpassing even Ukraine and Syria.
  • Chad has received the largest share of people fleeing Sudan (nearly 40 per cent of those who have fled since violence erupted in April 2023). Across eastern Chad, one in three people are now refugees. The volume of arrivals has placed an unbearable strain on one of the world’s poorest countries. Refugees in Chad now find themselves lacking even the most basic support necessary for survival.
  • The scale and rate of the current displacement is unprecedented. In Adré, the city closest to the Darfur border, 150,000 refugees (who now outnumber locals by more than two to one), are living in a self-constructed informal settlements, awaiting relocation to the new camps.
  • Given the humanitarian needs and gaps, NRC is contributing to the emergency response by providing assistance to the refugee population relocated to the new camps. The intervention focuses on integrated programming in sectors where NRC can add value (Shelter; Education; Information, Counselling, and Legal Assistance; and Protection from Violence).
  • NRC is commencing its emergency humanitarian response with these key competencies to enable refugees and the host population affected by the crisis to have inclusive access to quality humanitarian assistance.
  • This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that responds to the diverse needs, priorities, and concerns raised by affected communities.
  • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to join our work culture that empowers every employee to share ideas and take responsibility.

What we offer

  • N’Djamena/Abeche, Chad duty station.
  • 24-month contract duration.
  • Frequent travel.
  • Grade 12 in NRC’s Salary Scale, with accompanying terms and conditions. NRC offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.
  • NRC is an equal opportunities employer and aims to have staffing diversity in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, and physical ability.
  • We think outside the box, encourage ideas, and give responsibility to all employees at all levels. You will have many opportunities to be heard and take the initiative.
