About the job
Kvinna till Kvinna has supported women’s rights in Rwanda since 2017 and today 10 colleagues work to support the development of women’s right in the country. As Country director you are responsible for developing and ensuring the implementation of programmes in accordance with Kvinna till Kvinna’ s mandate, policies, delegation of authority, working methods, operational plan, budget and agreements with donors and partner organisations.
You hold managerial, administrative, security and financial responsibility, including management of the overall country budget. As Country director you are responsible for recruiting, managing, and motivating the staff in the office in Kigali in line with Kvinna till Kvinna’ s leadership policy.
Additionally, you are Kvinna till Kvinna’s official representative in the country. This also entails networking and maintaining relationships with relevant international and national stakeholders, including authorities and donors and developing and maintaining partnerships, first and foremost with women’s rights organisations.
The Country director is based in our office in Kigali and belongs organisationally to the Programme Department and reports to the Regional Manager for sub-Saharan Africa.
About you
To be successful in this role, you are an experienced manager and a strong leader. We believe you are collaborative, team-oriented and can motivate others, foster dialogue and facilitate discussions. Your work is strategic, goal-oriented with the ability to prioritize and delegate, but you can dive into details when needed.
You have experience in managing change and you are someone who enjoys building in a changing organization, including programs and structures. You are responsible and flexible with strong communication-, conflict sensitivity- and cultural sensitivity skills. You enjoy liaising with like-minded organisations, donors, and women’ rights actors, and you feel confident in representing the organisations in external setting
Needless to say – you are engaged and interested in women’s rights and share our values.
You need to at least have
- Academic degree in a relevant field such as political science, gender studies, international relations, development studies, peace- and conflict studies, human rights;
- Extensive work experience which includes managerial experience leading staff and management of programmes of similar size and focus.
- Demonstrated knowledge in, and experience from working with, one or more of the following thematic areas: promotion of gender equality/respect for women’s rights; peacebuilding/conflict resolution; women’s empowerment; gender-based violence prevention; and/or support to women’s human rights defenders;
- Experience in:
- programme and project management, including strong monitoring and evaluation skills and knowledge in results-based management and quality assurance;
- working in civil society, preferable in Rwanda, including feminist and women’s rights programming, advocacy and movement building
- budgeting and budget follow-up; including performing or overseeing administrative and finance-related tasks;
- successful fundraising from a range of donor including institutional and private;
- managing risk and handling cases of fraud and corruption cases in an NGO setting;
- human resource management in a conflict or post conflict setting with a diverse staff group including having the responsibility for the safety and security of an organisation and its staff.
- managing partnerships with local civil society actors including funding, thematic and organisational development support;
- Excellent speaking and writing skills in English
Merits
- Knowledge of the Human Rights’ based approach
- Knowledge of methods and approaches of the Swedish International Development cooperation
- Experience from working with EU-funding;
- Ability to communicate orally in French or Kinyarwanda;
- Familiarity with Kvinna till Kvinna’s mandate and working methods.
- Relevant education in marketing / communication / graphic design
- A valid driver’s license.

This is a national, two year fixed-term, local contract under Rwanda labour legislation with a starting probationary period of 6 months. Candidates must have the right to work and reside in Rwanda.
The position is based in Kigali but through regular digital meetings, we stay in touch with our colleagues in the region and abroad. Your role will include 2 – 3 trips per year to Europe and other parts of Africa. We apply goal-oriented working hours.
