Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria (Borno State) and Southeast Nigeria (Cross River State) as well as in the anglophone region of Cameroon, MI is currently active in the WASH and Protection sector for improving the lives of both the IDP/refugee populations and the host communities. While the WASH activities include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion, Protection activities focus on Gender-based Violence (GBV) prevention and case management. Malteser International applies a participatory, gender sensitive and inclusive approach.

For its work in Nigeria and Cameroon, Malteser International is looking for a motivated Country Coordinator with leadership experience in a volatile security environment.

As Country Coordinator you will represent Malteser International in Nigeria and Cameroon and develop its presence in the countries according to context specific strategic and coherent goals. You will coordinate and supervise the program team of Malteser International in Nigeria and provide guidance and technical support to project teams and partners to achieve set targets. While ensuring all program implementation is done in accordance with Malteser International’s policies, procedures, and guidelines, you will closely work together with HQ’s program manager.

Your responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of MI country strategies by proactively identifying fundraising opportunities and potential partnerships and ensure timely planning, preparation and writing of proposals according to donor and MI standards
  • Coordinate and evaluate project implementation to ensure high program quality in accordance with international standards while supporting the revision of overall action plans and budget
  • Communicate frequently with HQ program manager, report regularly on programmatic developments and ensure relevant information is also fed into UN and government tracking systems (clusters, HRP, UNHCR, etc.)
  • Build and maintain good relations with partner organisations, national authorities, international actors and the media by participating in relevant clusters, meetings, events and conferences
  • Supervise and manage all national and international staff, in close consultation with HQ, including performance reviews and capacity building activities, according to national law and MI guidelines
  • Head the Security Management Team, lead in-country crisis management and ensure security guidelines are communicated, updated and followed while coordinating the security situation with local authorities and other INGOs

Your profile:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as country responsible for an international NGO in a volatile security environment, with proven track record of successfully implementing a country program that is in line with international and donor standards

  • Relevant master’s degree from a university, e.g., in management of humanitarian relief, economics, social sciences or comparable

  • Proven leadership and management skillset through experience in leading, supporting and coaching teams in a trustful and culturally sensitive way

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to effectively motivate people and to diplomatically build and manage the relationship with different authorities, donors, and partner organisations

  • Proven experience in security management as well as physical and mental strength to work, live and lead in a hardship location

What we offer:

  • Start Date: 15/05/2022

  • Duty Station: Maiduguri, Nigeria (with frequent travel to field locations and Abuja)

  • Duration of contract: 12 months (extension very likely)

  • Salary according to qualification and experience, insurance package, accommodation in team house, one home flight per year of employment, R&R every 10 weeks
