About Us
The Green Economy Coalition (GEC) is the world’s largest alliance dedicated to accelerating the transition to a green, fair and inclusive economy. Founded in 2009, the GEC brings together around 65 members, including citizen groups, civil society, research organisations, and UN entities, united in the belief that our economic system needs fundamental change.
We are now looking for a Convenor to join us on a full-time, permanent basis, working 35 hours per week.
The GEC Secretariat is hosted by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), a policy and action research organisation promoting sustainable development and linking local priorities to global challenges. We are based in London and work across five continents with some of the world’s most vulnerable people to strengthen their voices in the decision-making arenas that affect them. With more than 150 members of staff working with associates and partners around the world, IIED has been at the forefront of evidence-based policymaking in sustainable development for over 50 years.

The salary range advertised in GBP is applicable in the UK only, and the salary offer in another country would depend on the local terms and conditions. We only use the UK salary structure to determine starting salaries, but it will not apply to salaries outside the UK thereafter.

You’ll play a pivotal role in driving the global transition to a fair and inclusive green economy, leading the world’s largest green economy alliance with members across continents, all whilst using our respected platform to amplify your voice, expand your network and increase your visibility as a leader in the green economy space.
The Role
As the Convenor, you will act as the Executive Director of the Green Economy Coalition, leading the delivery of the GEC Strategy to promote an inclusive green economy transition.
Leading the GEC Secretariat, you’ll provide strategic leadership, co-ordinate fundraising and programme delivery, oversee financial management and manage monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL), developing the GEC strategy in line with coalition priorities.
You’ll engage with diverse stakeholders on a strategic level, enabling collaboration and empowering collective influence, and represent the organisation at major international events, driving policy development and setting the direction of how a green economy can be best achieved.
Additionally, you will:
– Line manage a number of staff
– Identify priority issues and strategic opportunities to engage decision makers
– Ensure compliance with donor financial, monitoring and reporting requirements
– Update and develop the Steering Group
About You
To be considered as a Convenor, you will need:
– Experience of creating, developing and/or managing networks, coalitions and international partnerships
– Experience of working in partnership with national governments and agencies, international organisations, UN agencies and processes, the EU, multilateral finance institutions and/or philanthropic funds
– Fluency in English
– A post-graduate degree in environmental science, economics, sustainable development or related field, or relevant work experience in the sector
You’ll also need substantial experience at a professional level that demonstrates proven skills in:
– Leadership, including leadership of diverse teams
– Fundraising, including a sustained track record in securing funding for different projects from a variety of donors
– Advocacy and external relations
– Building and sustaining teams through collaborative people management
– Budget management
– Convening, dialogue and negotiation processes
