Controller

Our client, a leading nonprofit foundation, is seeking an energetic and proactive Controller. This valuable member of the team will be responsible for completing operational accounting duties in support of the organization’s overall goal to expand the mission. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, highly analytical, and pro-active with respect to identifying and implementing process change which helps in driving increased accuracy. This position reports to the Director of Accounting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each of the essential duties and responsibilities listed below. The duties and responsibilities include the following, though other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for month-end accounting close process including Excel schedule preparation, journal entry input, and income/expense allocation to donor funds.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts with follow-up and corrective action to resolve discrepancies.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Preparation of financial reports and presentation decks for Board Executive Committee.
  • Review weekly accounts payable run initiated by other team members.
  • Assist with annual audit, including Excel schedule preparation and pulling appropriate documents requested by auditors.
  • Assist with annual 990 ad 990-T tax return preparation including pulling required schedule information.
  • Preparation of donor fund reports annually and on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Maintain Charitable Gift Annuity and Charitable Remainder Trust records.
  • Serve as a mentor and leader to interns and other accounting personnel.
  • Special projects and duties as assigned.
  • Back-up to other accounting and finance personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidate will be professional, dependable, proactive with excellent communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with numbers is a must.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to multi-task and have strong organization skills.
  • Team player with excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise sound decisions based on accurate and timely analysis.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years accounting experience required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and intermediate proficiency in Word, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
  • Experience with not-for-profit accounting preferred.
  • Blackbaud Financial Edge accounting software a plus.
