Summary: The Consultant will support a regional project that promotes the individual and organizational well-being of civil society (Burma/Myanmar), supporting efforts to advance human rights, healing, and justice for survivors of atrocity crimes. The Consultant will primarily oversee psychosocial support interventions, including direct individual and group work with activists and survivors. The Consultant will also provide technical assistance and help create the collaborative foundation for wider project efforts focused on strengthening the well-being of civil society activists and supporting trauma-informed approaches to their human rights work.

Job Responsibilities:

40% Mental Health and Psychosocial Support: Provide mental health and psychosocial support to local civil society activists and survivors. Conduct comprehensive assesments and consultations to identify needs and risk factors. Tailor intervention options to adapt to individual, contextual, and cultural factors. In collaboration with clinical supervisors, use appropriate evidence-based interventions informed by a treatment plan. Conduct follow-up assesssments. Maintain secure records.

20% Well-Being and Resilience: Assess the needs of organizations serving survivors of torture and other gross human rights violations, and contribute to the development of training materials to address these needs. Design and carryout training programs on psychosocial care for local activists, and ensure content is contextually and culturally adapted. Provide in-person and remote mentoring for project partners on resilience.

10% Community Building: Assist in establishing a CVT presence in-country. Develop relationships with local civil society organizations and sensitively foster collaborative connections. Promote trauma-informed network development as a means to identify shared priorities and needs related to the project scope. Contribute to selection of partners that will benefit from technical assistance and support. Develop and manage relationships with partners through check-ins, consultations, and feedback sessions.

10% Capacity Development: Continually assess needs related to project scope and recommend new training or coaching activities. Document materials, manuals, and other resources developed. Provide trauma-informed clinical skills trainings and/or human rights documentation trainings to promote sustainable project outcomes.

10% Other Project Duties: Participate in other project activities, including meetings, evaluation, and reporting. Complete administrative responsibilities.

Qualifications:

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Work experience (volunteer or paid) related to psychology, counseling, and mental health
  • Work experience (volunteer or paid) collaborating with civil society activists
  • Any appropriate certifications and/or licensure to deliver scope of work in line with local regulations, if applicable

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Experience related to human rights and transitional justice
  • Experience related to staff care and resilience
  • Experience working with survivors of conflict-related sexual violence

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluency in English.
  • Fluency in at least one relevant local language
  • Understanding of and extensive experience implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions, including individual, group and community-based approaches for people who have suffered torture and trauma.
  • Experience supporting organizational staff to maintain personal and professional well-being and to manage job stress and vicarious trauma.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to cultural, political, social and economic contextual factors.
  • Experience living and working in Southeast Asia
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills
  • Interest in or commitment to human rights

• Time spent on the computer is approximately 40%

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; stand; walk, climb stairs; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

Travel: Ability to travel locally and regionally.
